Items of interest.interest

1. It is becoming almost impossible to buy a new PC without Windows Vista installed
2. There is an estimated 1.1 Billion people online (of that amount about 300 Million have high-speed access)
(as reported by China overtaking US for fast internet access as Africa gets left behind)

From
Code
SoftwareMedia.com (semi spam site so didn't make active link)

Quote
The first update to Microsoft Windows Vista will arrive in the first quarter of 2008 in the form of Service Pack 1. The update is mostly a collection of existing fixes and tweaks for improving stability and reliability; it’s not a delivery with a lot of features. There will be a few minor enhancements, though, like the ability to encrypt multiple hard drive partitions using Vista’s BitLocker feature. Support for exFAT, a file format for removable storage and for EFI (extensible firmware interface) will also be added. The update is expected to be a hefty 1GB download and will require 7GB of free hard drive space to install, though much of that will be returned to the user after installation.

So let's see... if I'm not one of the 300 million users with high-speed access, but I'm so tired of my new Vista PC running slow and the SP1 promises to fix it, how long will it take me to download 1GB ?

Well according to this calculator MARTINDALE'S FILE DOWNLOAD TIME CALCULATOR
it will take [1 DAY, 14 HOURS, 45 MINUTES, 8 SECONDS] basically about 39 hours to download this new Vista SP1

Sure hope your neighbor has a DVD burner and high-speed access or Microsoft ships the Vista SP1 for FREE

Actually a lot of PC's and laptops are still sold with XP in the UK - although these tend to be aimed at the business market, rather than home users.

Spot on there Ian.
I believe they are mostly coming with XP Pro.

I've just had PC World (yuch!) send me brochures for business and half the PCs and laptops were still XP Pro.

Just about a month ago I bought a computer for our kids. I went the cheap route and got some $299 special from Walmart. I couldn't find one that came with XP so it came with Vista Basic. It took at least 3 minutes for it to fully boot each time, even longer to shut the piece of crap down. I finally wiped it and put XP basic on it, much better.

I was at a novell seminar yesterday with a bunch of system administrators. When asked about the probability of introducing Vista soon on the workplace, about zero people raised their hand.

I am pretty sure we will be forced to go for it one day, but that days is not tomorrow smile

Damm Vista frown I never sell one pack of it. My customers allways ask for XP and I get more and more trouble to order systems without Vista.

Vista is slow and ugly. Lots of software makes trouble. In commercial environments you can't use it. We have a own huge software suite in development and this runs up to XP but not on Vista. The SDK what we use is not Vista ready and no new release is visible frown And just changing the SDK is not possible. The whole system is to complex.

Wash you mouth out! LOL

Mind you I do sometime buy from there now (never used to) - but ONLY when their prices are cheaper using their collect at store.

Vista is trash, hate it... BUT, when SP2 came out for XP I was able to get the update shipped for free with my, errm, "licensed" version wink.

Yes, same here. The business line of computers can be purchased with XP. Was speaking of the HOME user. I'm not aware of any Retail Outlet that offers XP anymore, you have to buy VISTA.

There are enhancements but mostly for security. What is new that is floating your boat SD ?

The big issue for me is that normal registry reads, and scripts in general don't run anymore which now forces you to do policy type stuff that could easily have been done remotely before.

From an administrative point of view if you have to manage thousands of computers this is a PITA big time as now there is no quick and dirty remote fixes.

I'm sure in time we'll all find ways to overcome it but considering that scripts that used to run just fine on:
95, 98, NT4, 2K, XP no longer run. That means that the software has allowed remote scripting for over 10 years and now it has to be done differnetly.

This Vista notebook seems buggy, for no reason the right click will stop working. I couldn't get the sound box to pop back up to un-mute it earlier this evening. I'll need to re-boot soon to get things back in order.

Well right now the home users and a few business users are crying about VISTA - just wait till Server 2008 comes out (then you can no longer buy Server 2003) THEN you're going to hear some real crying from the IT World.

Server 2008 looks, feels, and acts like VISTA - which is NOT cool to me for a Server. I suppose I'll have to start saving up my money at work and start buying 2003 Licenses while I can.
The bigger Enterprise companies on Volume License with MS won't have to worry about it as they will be able to install 2003 Server for years to come, but smaller Companies it will be difficult to get.

Might want to hold off till the beginning of new year there SD. intel is supposed to have a much better quad available then - that's what I'm waiting for - told the wife to ear mark the money for new system with it. wink

Supposed to be about 20% faster overall than the current Quad and support some new extensions

Non assembled eek

That don't happen in my house. Once I get it, I have to put it together and get it running if I have to stay up all night.

LOL - I've installed Windows so many times I can't count. I would have to say hundreds of times though (from scratch builds, not Ghost images) I've installed probably over a thousand using Ghost too.

We have XP on our computers, and at work all our PCs are still XP. I didn't realize there were so many issues with Vista though. I'm hinting for a laptop for Christmas, and I was hoping it would have Vista on it, so that I can "play" with it.

My husband builds our home computers so that we can have exactly what we want in them, but we've used XP for years, and love it. We have never had problems with it, so it's kind of the old "if it's not broken ... " thing for us.

I have Vista on one machine only and it was by accident. However when it arrived I figured 'what the heck - I'll have to start sometime'.

It did slow me down a little at first, I guess it's ok now.
But yes I still prefer XP.

We actually did do just that on about a dozen hp desktops at work.
Had to buy some licenses but the Touch Screens we wanted to use it for did not have a USB driver for VISTA.

'eh it's just like 98 -> XP (or ME if you even bothered), all sorts of crazy incompatabilities... Took the majority of hw out of an hp computer and replaced it with new hw; was a real shame too

I'm a dealer too but I never sell a single Vista pack. No one buy it. If I sell to a companys a new PC its allways orderd with XP. I hve customers who take the PC with vista but kill it soon as possible, take the licens and put an XP image on the computer.

Vista is fat, slow, ugly and we have a lot of software trouble with it. Our business customers use lot of big software packs that cannot be run under Vista and no updates for Vista in sight.

It would be a good deal for MS to bring out a XP-reloadet.

I get a notebook with Vista. I took 3 minutes 40 seconds to boot up and be ready to open the browser and surf the internet. We kill it, put XP on it, get all needet drivers from support and the result is: boot in 2 Minutes, 10 seconds with browser and be ready to surf.

the Notebook have 2GB ram and a 2Ghz dual core cpu.

My XP laptop takes about 5 minutes to boot up at home, and 3 minutes at work when I'm in the domain.

But that's because it is in desperate need of a re-install smile
