I was reading some websites back from 2000 which mentioned UBB. Apparently, there was a freeware version which still had posting and whatnot but you couldn't search, and there were other limatations although time wasn't one of them. Anyway, the ultimate bb site is long gone but through some surfing of the web archive, I found my way here. So my question is this: Does anyone have any idea on how I can get ahold of this old freeware version?

If releases of this version still existed, it would be highly unwise to run; there are major security updates (not to mention feature additions) within a 7-8 year span... This version would likely be highly insecure (not to mention unsupported); I believe this would also be in the 5x series, which is ancient in itself.

yep - far better to run recent software than risking your site with any software that is a risk

...and considering there are so many freeware boards (actively maintained) available if finance is an issue.

I believe the 'earthquake' edition was considered free by many.

Splurgy, I'm not sure if you've looked at the UBB price, but it really is not expensive, IMO.

I was just thinking that perhaps some users (teenagers etc) might not have the financial resources that others do.
Otherwise I'd say UBB everytime.

A lot of the freeware forums aren't worth the price... Look at PHPBB; theres a hack/exploit for it published constantly, and people rarely upgrade... big problems arise lol

Actually I've been quite impressed with phpBB 3. If it wasn't for the fact that it takes too many steps to do some simple tasks in the control panel, I'd recommend it.
