Hi,

Do these exist in the USA?

I could do with a USA mobile (cell) number whilst I am in Florida, and am looking for the cheapest way to do this.

Any suggestions?

If one needs a US address, anyone willing to assist wink

'eh we have a ton of cheap prepaid cellphones; tmobile (what I use), boost mobile (i used to do their tier2 support when they where a mini company servicing only cali and nevada), virgin mobile, then like 100 others :x...

I like the TMobile To Go (prepaid) myself though

Ian, you can just drop into a Walmart and buy a Track-Phone. I've never used them, but the terrorists love them smile

Seriously, you pay about $50 for one, and it includes phone minutes. When you're finished with it, you just throw it away.

lmao @ Rose / terrorists. sadly so true though..

i'd also recommend what Rose said. Walmarts are everywhere and it's easy peasy.

Interesting. There's a trip to Orlando planned for next year, and getting a prepaid card looks good for phone costs smile

For me a card is enough, I can use one of my many cellphones smile

Thanks - does that give me a regular US cell number?

Essentially I am going to divert my office phones to it - as it will be a lot cheaper than taking my calls on a Uk mobile phone - I would have to pay around $2+ a minute to accept incoming calls - hence the need for a US cell phone.

I can bring an unlocked phone, so even a sim will do.

However my fear is that the phone company may require a US address.

The zipcode for Beverly Hills is 90210 smile

In Holland you can just walk in a store and buy a prepaid package and start using it right away. Pretty sure it's the same in the US of A.

Ian, surprisingly, the U.S. has not got on board with sim cards. They're starting to, but a long way to go I'm afraid. I believe that a Tracfone will be usable immediately, and others can call you on it. Not sure about international calls though.

I prefer tmobile to trackphone, mainly because my wife does the support for all major carriers prepaid (see the *VESTA charge when you refill your prepaid? Yeh, that callcenter is in Tigard Oregon); but since it's only for several days it doesn't matter wink...

Blaaskaak, your photos scare me, and amuse me... You remind me of Mr. Bean...

Luckely your first reaction was a laugh, and that is how my remark was intended.

I have no desire whatsoever to offend anyone, if so, apologies.

But for me it was just a over the top image of someone in a santa suite and you saying somewhere you might get in a santa costume this christmas smile

as for USA pay as you go sims, I am thinking about using skype or whatever to make my calls to home sweet home when I'm abroad. That's about as ultracheap as you can get.

I use VOIP - even on my travels - problem is when my computer is not on, then the calls to the VOIP redirect to either a landline or my mobile.

Was trying to avoid paying a high roaming cost smile

It is cheaper to divert the calls to a US number smile

For me, it will probably be also plan B to get some cheap prepaid thing in the USA. In holland you can get them for about 10 euro's in a store, that's doable smile

The downside is I believe in the US, you pay for incoming calls which is crazy!!

Yeh, the only cell company that allows free incoming used to be nextel, I don't even know if they do that anymore... and it's defiantely a no on the prepaid side of things (Prepaid Nextel is through Boost Mobile, a former employer of mine, go fig).

I use VOIP myself as well; Vonage (funny commercials), I can call internationally for free to a lot of countries hehe

That is crazy. I know of one plan in holland (don't know if it exists anymore), where you would actually get call minutes if you made sure people called YOU a lot.

lol that'd be nifty...

here, every company is out to make a buck, by attempting to undercut their competition...

i still say that $50 for 2000 'anytime' minutes is absurd, covers both incoming and outgoing minutes...

yeh, that's a real "deal" for cellphones.. i find it leutecrous....

I have never understood this - unless it is more to do with roaming in the US - we have to pay for incoming if we are abroad - but never in our own country.

Seems unfair to have to pay for dodgy, nuisance or sales calls frown

Get this, I got charged last night, for calling the :FREE: number to call my cell provider to add more time to my phone...

charming! I would charge them for wasting your time LOL

I guess though if your inclusive minutes are 50% cheaper than ours then it is all the same in the end.

I notice from ads on bus-stops that one of our providers charge 15p per minute on PAYG - so I do not know how this compares.

Boost mobile charges $0.25/min
TMobile (on gold rewards) is like $0.09/min (off gold rewards it's like $0.11)

Theres a bunch of providers though heh

However do any of these NOT require a USA address or SS number etc. - or is it a case of simply putting in any address and the point of sale?

My concern is if I try and register a phone, I will not be able to get it live because a) I do not have a US credit card and b) I am not a resident of the US.

When I setup my tmobile account, it was all automated, no address, no ssn, no nothing... just buy a tmobile to go phone at the store, and a card if you want more time, then bam all done after activation lol

When I moved from Australia to the U.S., I could not believe that people had to pay for incoming calls. I kept thinking that the person telling me about it was insane.

It still makes me crazy, and I've been here 10 years now. smile
