So, I'm pretty sure that I could figure this out, but just wanted to hear maybe a "yes" or "no" from an expert before I go too far in testing this.

Is it possible to have multiple private categories, the access to which is granted based upon group?

For example, let's say hypothetically that I have Group A, Group B, and Group C. These groups are completely unrelated and their interest in each others forums is zero. Could I create a category that says "Group A" and only members of Group A could click on it and see the contents (sub-cats, forums, threads, posts, etc.? (same for group b, c, etc.)?

yes, but you will also, need to apply the group based permissions to any sub-forums under the main 'group forum'

ie: even though you might logically group a forum and it's sub-forums together as one.. you will still need to group each child forum as well..

i do this all the time..

like

'uber geek forum' -- geek group main forum
'uber geek games sub forum' -- geek group sub forum
'uber geek whatever sub forum' -- geek group sub forum

'special peeps forum' -- special group main
'special peeps sub forum' -- special group sub

Gotcha. So, is that where "private calendars" come into play as well? In other words, can these groups have private calendars that appear in their portal (like the public calendar that appears here to the right)?

no, private calendars are per user and don't interplay with the group permission system.
