I'm setting up a picture forum on my boards... the forum itself shows on the forum list, but any pictures posted in it only show as the text file, no pictures, thumbnails or any sort of image is displayed.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

Normally your asked to check your gallery folder via ftp
to see if the image is actually being uploaded.
If yes then it could be a path issue, or a software problem.
Can you see any captcha images?

Is there some extra prep work I need to do before setting up a gallery forum compared to regular forums?
Is there any documentation on how to setup a gallery forum and other things? Like a nice instruction manual?

Instruction manual? What's that? I wish I could find one as my moderators would then have something to help them rather then asking me all the time as I don't know how to answer most of their questions.

go to the CP, run the "permission checker".
The tmp folder must be 777, the gallery folder and the folders in it must also be chmodded 777.
This must be done as if they're not then you can't upload to them.

You are correct; you cannot set permissions on files through the control panel as these permissions are required to make portions of the CP work.
