For a number of our users the new post indicators don't work properly. Some users have seen an improvement since we upgraded from 7.2.2 to 7.3.1 while others who weren't having trouble before now are.

The exact symptoms vary among those experiencing the problem. Some examples of what's been reported:

1) The new post indicators are wildly erratic everywhere. For instance, on the forum_summary page, forums that have no new posts will display the indicators while forums that do have new posts don't show the indicators, and which inaccuracy a given forum exhibits isn't consistent. Same thing with topics in a forum; topics that have been read will show as unread, etc.

2) The indicators are correct on the forum_summary, but in a forum topics that had been read and displayed as such for a time randomly revert to showing as unread.

3) Some forums never show new posts on the forum_summary page.

4) The "Mark all read" tool doesn't always do so or requires multiple attempts. When it does work, upon later visits random topics revert to displaying as unread.

5) Logging out or deleting cookies (usually combined with clearing browser cache) and logging in again sometimes brings temporary relief, but the problem always returns.

6) Since the 7.3.1 upgrade, occasionally forum_summary will suddenly show every thread and post as unread. On later views of the page this is often found to have corrected itself.

Any ideas on what's causing the inaccurate indicators for some users and how we can remedy the problem?

Are you running 7.3.1 or 7.4?

The new post indicators rely pretty heavily on sessions. First thing I'd do is check your sessions directory and make sure it's fully writable, and that old files can be deleted/overwritten.

From within your control panel you should be able to click on the script and check general file permissions.
