Current feeling is that I'm glad I didn't pay money for the license yet!
My patience is wearing thin.
I've still got to iron out why my domain name is still not "mapped" properly at the host. Until that is done I gues I'm really wasting my time.

Biggest thing is that I am doing way too much guessing and riddle solving in the config.inc.php file.
There should be better instructions!
I'm sure it is all abc123 to those that have administered servers or have backgrounds with perl and php scripting....I do not and just want the software to work.

Something specific that is troubling me:
In the path and url variables, when it asks for a path
like /usr123/home/my_user_name/public_html/ubbthreads
Is it dangerous to use "my_user_name" where instinct tells me it ought to be the domain name in the path???????

Hopefully I'm right in assuming that Url to the main installation is like http://www.domain_name.com/ubbthreads.

See where my aggravation is coming from?

Also when all this sql database stuff is created; where do they exist? Are they files that I can "see" when I FTP in with my ftp client and download to backup etc??????

hope this is the right board <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
Thanks

Can't edit after 30 minutes oh well

Update:
createtable.php ran ok in theory
it says all table created with no error messages.

so just where are all those tables now?

Got to the admin page and created user name and password. OK

Got ubbthreads up in browser, clueless for a few minutes there looking for the Admin link at the top left, since instructions didn't say log in first; Doh!

Logged in and get a failure to find the file geez I lost the browser window for that; anyway the start_page.php not find or doesn't exist came up.

I checked. It is on the server.
Maybe it is a domain mapping problem still as I just noticed my domain is pulling up the host's index page.

What's the url you are running at? Like to take a look and see I can spot the problem.

It is http://www.properform.com/ubbthreads

I think I have it done finally - sure glad it wasn't step by step instructions on how to diffuse a bomb <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="images/icons/grin.gif" />

The host finally got the domain mapping squared away.

It looks like the demo is so stripped that I don't know if I'm comfortable in basing a purchase on it. I'll go and try it out some more.

I was under the false impression that I was going to be able to create moderators manually with their name and password specific to individual forums.

Kind of in this same install vein;
I noticed by hitting the server at the /ubbthreads directory the server index lists the contents.
Is this dangerous?
What is it that I tell the host admin to do to it to prevent index listing of contents?

I suppose I could drop in an index.html page with a redirect and or a link on it.
Still what is the defacto standard procedure ?
thanks,

An index.html page should work fine. Installation should get alot easier once I'm done with the install script.

Install script; heck yeh that would be great!

In the interim or in addtion to; extensive expansion of the commenting in the config files would be helpful.

I'd be more than happy to proof them for you to see if they make sense to someone without developers myopia.

David,
I did use those instruction documents <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> (no offense just been itching to use that one)

They are a good start and I would have never got the demo installed without them. I give them a D+. They leave way to much to assumed experience and know how.
I wasted way too much time figuring out the "puzzle".

Rick mentioned working on an install script which would be wonderful, but I wonder if better written instructions and better commenting of the script coding would put a lot of fires out with less development time than a script that I assume will have to cover an awful lot of variables.

Well, help us make them better then. This is the kind of feedback we need to hear in order to improve. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

In this thread please tell Rosemary what was good, what was bad. The more you can relate in quantifiable terms will make them that much better.

Got the document and I'm going through it in detail!

Thanks so much for passing along your thoughts <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

One question I had was which specific lines in the config file do you think are the most confusing for a new person? It's hard when you're so close to it to know what it's like for a first-time installer. If you have any thoughts on that, I'd love to hear them.
