I thought I understood the new permission setting but maybe I don't after reading Basil's post in the bug forum.
Or maybe I just don't understand the terminology properly.

We have three site permission settings for PM's now.
Since we set the values based on groups.

1.Total # of posts allowed in a private topic

Item one even though you set the values per group is the maximum topics each user can have existing, correct?

2.Max # of private topic participants
Note:This setting dictates the maximum number of users that can be invited to a private topic.

Item two is the maximum number of Recipients a user can send a private topic to for each message sent, correct?

3.Total # of private topics allowed
Note:The maximum number of private topics this group can have. If this is set to 0, this group cannot start new private topics.

This is the one that gets me.
It seems to me to be if you set item 3 to 100 for the user group and you have 100 users and each user has one existing private message in MyStuff>Messages. Then nobody in the user group can send another PM until someone deletes a message.

If that is correct how do you go about determining a good setting?
Also how does anyone know that setting was exceeded?
I did notice the default setting for Admin and Moderators is 10,000.

I think the confusion is the group vs. user thinking. For example.

Quote
It seems to me to be if you set item 3 to 100 for the user group and you have 100 users and each user has one existing private message in MyStuff>Messages. Then nobody in the user group can send another PM until someone deletes a message.

It's not shared between all users in the group. If you set it to 100, a user in that group can have 100 primvate messages. Another user in that group can have 100 as well.

As for how they can tell if they are exceeding the setting. On the main private message listing you get a quota that shows how many private topics you have and how many you can have maximum.

#1. Total # of posts allowed in a private topic. This sets how many replies can be in a single private topic. So, when you click on an invididual private topic, this is refering to all the posts inside.

#3. Total # of private topics allowed. This is how many private topics you can have in total. This refers to how many topics you see when you look at the initial screen when clicking on Messages under My Stuff.

OTAY [censored].
Call me dense but I think I get it now.
I know there was a reason to this madness but I just don't see it right now.

Thank you Rick!

Thank you Rick!

I thought permission #1 was the number of "topics" (not posts, but topics) that a member of a certain group could have in their in box and permission #3 was the number or "posts" within a given topic that you could have. However, back to my original bug question - when I first installed 7.5, my permission #1 (Max number of topics) was set to 100 for all groups. However, I was getting complaints right off the bat that people who only had two or three topics were being told they had exceeded their limit? I reset #1 to 100,000 and things seem to be working now, but why was it not working when set to 100 and members could not reply to PMs?)

I think Rick only answered my last portion of my questions.
I did not really understand the answer so I tested it myself on my test board.
Here is what I found
Total number of posts(is the new permission)
This is what confused me I was thinking Total number of topics was the new permission. Don't know why but I did.
And Rick 's answer is how it works
So Item 1 Total # of posts allowed in a private topic in my question limits how how many replies a topic can have for lack of a better word
Item 3 Total # of private topics allowed is is also just as rick stated.

When I tested I only have three members on my test board me,myself and I. Setting Item 1 to a value of three limited it to one post and two replies. I could not add another reply and a message stated "This topic has reached it's maximum length of 3 posts. You may not add another post to this topic."

So that worked correctly.

Then also I had set"Total # of private topics allowed" to a value of 1.
When I attempted to start a 2nd new private message not a reply.
I get a statement " recipient name is over their Private Topic limit"
So that worked correctly.

But the message in both cases refers to the Recipient quota not the sender.

In fact the user can exceed the Total # of private topics allowed" by sending but just can't receive one over the setting

So in my case I only had three members and it seems to work correctly.

Maybe the issue in your case is not the person that could not send the message but the Recipient was the culprit that was over one of the quotas .

I hope that is clear as mud?

So in lieu of making a suggestion, Maybe some MYSQL people here can suggest some queries to check user PM stats that we can save in the control panel.
In fact I made that a suggestion a while back about some canned queries in one forum for admin tools to share with everyone.

i had a query saved that would check for what i called 'PM whores' and listed all peeps #PMs, reverse sorted by total and gave a top 10..

turned it into a CI, so we could get peeps to clean up their inboxes...

i'll search for it..

Okay!
But I would still like to see a new forum here.
Say called MySQl admin query tools.
Then peeps like me can save them to the control panel.
And use them

I thought I had it saved as well on another site but just went and looked and don't appear to have it anymore.
