I was screwing with a style and hosed it up.
So I say to my self I will ftp the backups to the styles folder to restore.
So I uploaded the php file and the css file to the site.. All works okay until I revisit the control panel in the styles section.

Even if I don't make changes and submit. It changes everything to the hosed settings.
And it is broken again
Could it be a browser cache setting?
No I was using FF then switched to IE.

So there must either be another method to restore a style from a backup or another file to upload?

The file aka the css file is time coded and such with the database. If the time code does not match it will mess up your look of your site.

The css file permission needs to be 666 aka -rw-rw-rw- in your styles folder.

The bold part is the time code that needs to match in the styles database:

BeagleWorld_1250470458.css

Now if your permissions are not correct on your styles folder this will not allow your message board to update the file name for your style file it self and cause your template or style to appear really messed up.

It is kind of funny that you should ask this as the person who ripped off my site had a problem with their style stuff as they didn't, I'm guessing, have the permissions set properly. Now them never having any experience with this stuff as I did all the work they hosed their styles and then blamed me for messing up their site, even though I have no FTP, or web access to their site as they .htaccess banned every IP in my net block, LOL.

Well the permissions were correct I was just editing some color changes and it looked bad so I thought I would just upload a backup for styles.
So Like I said. After a file restore it looks fine until I go in the control panel and select update even if I don't change anything and the hosed colors are back. I will give your method a try. I can change the table date to the file date and see.

If you have exported your style you may be able to import the style again and then delete the hosed style. This should fix it for you the easy way.

I always export every style I make as soon as I have completed it and it is to my liking.

Yes I can do that but I would think if I have a backup I should be able to just upload the file and restore it with out doing anything. But something else is going on .
It is the coffee style from UBBskins but I changed a couple of settings over the last year. So I could just re-import the style and start over.
Stupid me thinking just backup the css file would allow me to just upload it back up to the site. But No!
That does not work.
Some other magic is going on with the style. Maybe Rick will chime in.

Well, I know I have hosed up a few things and recently blew the crap outta my test server requiring me to totally restore it and the test site for my UBB and I have had this problem my self. So...... This is what I have found out.

Your .css file date code needs to match the date code in your ubbt_STYLES database. And you have to have everything lining up with your numbered file for that style.

Three things going on there and it is to complicated for what it really needs to be for sure.

Yea when I get some time I will re-import the style from ubbskins and see if it fixes it. Right now it works so long as I don't touch it in the control panel.

Okay deleting and re-importing the style fixed it but I still don't understand why just uploading a back up does not work.
I will play with it this weekend a little more.

Styles are stored in the database, the php file/css file are flat file copies of all parsed information from the database; when there is an update it updates via the database information...

So importing a backup via the cp is the only way to restore.
