I'm toying with turning my P3 box into a linux server, was curious what linux flavors you guys recommended?

Well for a straight up linux install I'd recommend debian for servers and ubuntu for desktops.

When it comes to a PS3 however, it has it's own unique set of challenges to get it installed and operating properly, so I'd go with whatever you can find the best documentation on wink

Ahh, ok wink I'd go with Ubuntu. It's one of the more user friendly linux distros that I've come across.

and ubuntu can function as a server if need be?
how about running firewall/router software? or can I not do both on the same box?

Yes, it can function as a server as well, but since I figured you'd be using the standard gui instead of doing everything command line, then Ubuntu would be a good place to start. It's based off of Debian, which I use.

It can act as both a firewall and a router. Getting into a bit more advanced areas to do that, but you'd be looking at things like iptables and NAT, and then having all traffic go through your linux server.

yeah, I have been reading a little on another forum about it, and would like to mess with it and learn about it, and if could run both on he same box it would make life easier.

just downloaded ubuntu desktop and am in teh process of making sure there aren't any lost gems on the drives in that system before I kill it.. I'm glad I looked, I found my BTV Media and link keys!

Boy, it's been a loooong time since I've even looked at a linux book, so I can't really make a recommendation. Although most of the dummies books are at least somewhat useful.

I've used Ubuntu as a webserver, it is not user friendly when it comes to maintenance (sure, installing is simple). Honestly, use CentOS if you plan to use it as a server, the yum repos will do everything for you, and maintenance is pretty simple.

Books, well, you just want linux administration? If you're going CentOS grab any redhat book (since CentOS is simply a debranded RedHat Enterprise OS)

I have all of my linux servers (ubuntu and debian) auto update. Emails me if there is anything I need to look at as far as config changes, so maintenance is a piece of cake.

apt-get update
apt-get -y upgrade

those go into a nightly cronjob, and voila.

Well yeh, but the default apache2 instance in Ubuntu is going to be a pain for a novice wink... Not you or I who'd know excactly how to initially set it up... CentOS is dummyproof, with settings that just allow you to dump everything to the /var/www/html and the apache configs in standard locations...

well, I managed to get the webserver working
I set up vsftpd, I can FTP in from using the LAN IP with CuteFTP no problem, but when I try to access it from the WAN side, via my IP address or domain name, it fails to connect, though did open up the port in my router.. will mess with it more later.. I need a break!

I like how the configs are in a logical location in CentOS vs Ubuntu... Took me a while to figure out how they'd seperated everything up when I first started toying with it

I'll give it a try tomorrow if I have time, heading west for the weekend to prove to my folks that I am still a live.

I'm a bit late on this, sorry.

Did you alter the port forwarding on your router?

Tell port 80 to point at your IP

If thats the case, it's likely a var in the config that's only allowing local connections...

I think it is more like 7 downloads for iso 64. Never tried the torrent flavor. Not really sure what it is.

6 CD's, or 1 DVD.

And the "torrent flavor" isn't a flavor, it's simply a method of downloading the standard iso image(s).
