Greetings-
We are in the middle of upgrading from 7.2.2 to 7-5-4-1 and encountering an error at Step 1 of the install.php process.
The error is as follows:
styles/* FAILED (StyleExamples)
StyleExamples is a dir in the styles dir. I manually set that dir to 0777, rerun install.php, error persists and the perms are changed back to 0666. "A vicious cycle." What is the solution?

For now I'd just move the StyleExamples directory out completely. Not too sure what that contains, but you can put it back after the installation is finished.
However, reading your post a bit closer. If you're upgrading from 7.2.2 to 7.5.4, then make sure you're running the upgrade.php script and not the install portion.

Good catch on my running the incorrect php script. No complaints from upgrade.php about perms. Sailed cleanly through, and our UBB admin is now checking out the results of the upgrade. Thanks very much for your prompt reply!

You'll want to be sure to delete the install and upgrade directories (and everything beneath them) when you're not preforming an upgrade as someone can really mess things up by starting up the importer and overwriting your config file...
