I have had this problem for a few months "Freezing and Locking Up" I run a iMac and use Firefox

The forum will be working find for 1 or 2 weeks then every time I try to access it I get to the homepage and can not go to any other page after.

If I clear the forum cached I can normally access the site again or if I clear firefox cache I have fall access again until I visit another site using the same forum software.

I am using UBB.threads™ 7.5.4.2

I have ask my ISP to look at the server to see why it is blocking me however he said that I am not even accessing the server when I am blocked.

I thought it was my Modems firewall setting so I turn it off and plug my laptop into the modems without using the router and stall have the same problem.

I replaced my new Belkin Modem with another Linksys AM300 Modem and it was great for about 2 weeks and stopped again.

I never had a problem it has only been since I needed to get a new modem.

I have even got a new ISP for my ADSL I it still jams.

It seems like a cookie problem and if I switch to Safari I can access the site normally for 15 mins until it blocks my access again.

Has anyone had problems accessing there UBB using a new modem? any Ideas how I can get my access back?

I think it has to do with Cookies

Please help this Kiwi ;=)

first guess would be internet settings (since you changed the router etc. you may have reset your ethernet/wireless connection properties as well. Check firewall settings on your computer (as many OS's will reset the firewall when a change in your ethernet happens (as will happen with a new router many times). The issue may or may not be in your router firewall or DHCP settings as well. I am not an expert but those are the first 2 places I would check if I knew I was not even connecting to the server, and I could close and restart and it will come up ok for a bit. Check to see if your Browsers are defaulting to auto-detect internet settings (or the like). This would cause it to slow down anyway as it will try to detect the internet settings (or proxy) every time it reloads.

That's a strange one. I'd try and look at what level you're being blocked. If you're familiar with it, I'd try pinging your webserver IP when it's running normal (to make sure pings are allowed) and then ping again when you get blocked.

I have already turned all firewalls off and no access just the homepage will display on a new visit.

When it is jammed I can tab open a new window and visit other websites on my own server.

My server admin said that when I was jammed there was no sign of me accessing my own server until I when to a different site.

I'm curious if maybe the mysql server is hitting a max connect limit and it's just giving you grief until it settles...

Are other people able to access your forums during the "freezing"? How does "show processlist" look (via MySQL)

This is the thing I have not had anyone complain about hanging/freezing other than me.

I have 4 Macs and when It is hanging/freezing they all have the same problem and I skype other users at the same time and they say it is loading find.

My server admin tells me I am not even making it to the server.

I just turned all images of on fire fox and it worked fine for about 5 mins now both sites are hanging/freezing.

Once I empty my cache and cookies it will be back for about 2 mins.

My server admin is using a Mac and on Firefox so I really do think it is my modem however I have replaced the modem and made sure the firewall is off with no joy!

For what it is worth. I tested your site as a guest and visited other ubb sites. Some as a guest some as registered.
No Problems.
Using windows xp and firefox and a cable modem from my ISP.
My gut feeling is it is a connection issue from your house.

I know you replaced your modem and I know you changed ISP's.
But your wired connection to the internet is still unchanged.
Meaning you still have the same wires in the house, same wires to the street and the same wires to the telco switching stations. You just pay the bill to someone else.
So that means the only real difference is you may have more or less hops to the internet backbone.
Correct?

So my suggestion is to find out if you have connection troublshooting tools available to you. Call your ISP.

I went through this myself for months with my ISP.
I finally figured out my connection would drop out for anywhere from a few seconds to just under a minute.
My ISP needs at least 60 seconds to log a outage.
And only through constant calls did they finally come out, not to my house but went over all the lines amplifiers hubs and digital converters from a mile away did they finally resolve my issue. It took a very long time.
And they ended up replacing several components including some main lines.

But only after I replaced my cable modem 4 times. That was always the response from my ISP.
But I think it was due to other customers on the same line complaining did they finally send a crew out to check the system.

So I would start with tracert and ping tools which I can only assume a mac has.

Try them both when you do or do not have the problem.
You may find if the first hop fails that it could be the first server you hit. Or something else such as I mentioned.

There really is no easy way to test the wires unless you have some sweep test equipment and then you would need to access the connections at the street and beyond.

Thank you for your help and time! this could all be true however I can access other sites on my own server at the same time when the UBB site will not let me.

I think that the modem has some high tech security and when it see a heap of links and clever stuff it jams my connection to save me!

This is the site sites that jam on me

http://www.smallbore.co.nz
http://www.nz-equestrian.co.nz

Logged in and Logged out same same

If I turn images of (on Firefox) it will goes straight away for about 2 mins until the connection catches up with me and jams it again.

Note it is same on four computers using the same ADLS connection even if I bypass the Time Capsule router and connect straight to the LinkSYS ADSL Modem AM300 Software Version: 1.19.04

Something to test. Over various versions some users have had trouble with the shoutbox (it's always mainly been IE and older versions I believe). Just to eliminate it completely as a possible culprit, on your site, try turning off the column that has the shoutbox (you can disable it for your user specifically instead of for everyone) and then see if it still locks up.

Also looking at the manual for your modem:
6. My DSL service’s PPPoE is always disconnecting.
PPPoE is not actually a dedicated or always-on connection. The DSL ISP can disconnect the service after a
period of inactivity, just like a normal phone dial-up connection to the Internet.
• There is a setup option to “keep alive” the connection. This may not always work, so you may need to reestablish
connection periodically.
1. To connect to the Modem, go to the web browser, and enter http://192.168.1.1 or the IP address of the
Modem.
2. Enter the username and password, if asked. (The default username and password is admin.)
3. On the Setup screen, select the option Keep Alive, and set the Redial Period option at 1 minute.
4. Click the Save Settings button. Click the Status tab, and click the Connect button.
5. You may see the login status display as Connecting. Press the F5 key to refresh the screen, until you
see the login status display as Connected.
6. Click the Save Settings button to continue.
• If the connection is lost again, follow steps 1- 6 to re-establish connection.

Left the shout box off and it jammed again.

I have already had the keep alive but added the 60 second re-dial and no joy! ;-(

I normally work stuff like this out and have been working on this one for 2-3 months LOL it has got me this one!

Ok, what I'd do next is grab the Firefox Plugin "Live HTTP Headers". When it locks up on you that might give a bit of info if it's trying to do anything at all.

Looking at the settings you posted you have the redial set to 60 minutes .
The manual states this setting is in minutes not seconds. The factory default is 3.
So if you were trying to set it to 1 minute you would enter 1 not 60

I have a feeling that there is something amiss in your router (barring anything in Windows blocking your settings).

Since it happened with the new modem/router I would check the internal settings and permissions there (especially the firmware firewall built in).

I have a modem and router (Time Capsule) if I plug the modem into a laptop buy passing the router same problem.

I think the new modems are to high tech for the UBB software I going to find a old modem today and see if I can get it back to old.

Remember you heard it here 1st! ;-) Thank you for all you help

Well if you have success with your experiment. Then you would still have a issue where you would need to figure out what the differences are on the settings between the modems.
But it would be a good test.
Let us know what you find.

Hello Team

After going to the mac supplier in the city I surfed around on their T1 internet connection and after 15 minutes of bouncing back and forth between the 2 sites it finally jammed when using Safari.

Site 1) www.smallbore.co.nz
Site 2) www.nz-equestrian.co.nz

It maybe the way that I have set up my UBB with many links however I am 100% sure that the problem is with browser compatibility and for some reason it locks up after approx 10-15 minutes.

I also came home with a new modem (number 3) and straight away it jammed.

If you have a Macintosh computer and 15 minutes to spare log in using the test accounts I've set up to see if you can replicate the problem. Please note that you do not need to be logged in to experience the freezing.

Site 1) http://www.nz-equestrian.co.nz/ubbthreads.php/ubb/login.html

UserID: test Password: test

Site 2)

UserID: test Password: test

http://www.smallbore.co.nz/ubbthreads.php/ubb/login.html

Use the chatroom open a few postings and switch sites it will freeze on ya.

NOTE I have just had some user on a I.E with a PC saying he had that problem for a few weeks and now has gone away.

When it jams my server admin said I am not even making it to the server and at the same time I am jammed I can access other pages on the same server with no jamming.

ATM the main one that jam for me is http://www.nz-equestrian.co.nz been that way for 7 days.

Also good to know that when it is jammed for me others using the UBB are not jammed.

Wait there is one more point.
If it has jammed on one computer and I use another computer on the same network at same time to access the same page it is also jammed this is why I thought it must be the modem firewall (that is OFF) blocking the connection that is not getting to the server.

Have not left you much to work with A!!

Have you checked your network for virus? I know the constrikter virus did something similar redirecting your windows update links, or known virus scanner links to a redirect page and would not let you connect. As far as locking up I will look into it more in a few and see if I have any issue if you like.

I would also need to check the MAC dealers network for a virus as I have got it to lockup on a shop on new iMac and Different network

I can't replicate the issue on my Mac. (Not that I use it much other than it looks really nice sitting there). So I would say try another person's forum site and see if it does the same thing. Mine is in my signature and you are more than welcome to spam our spam forum to see if it is working properly. It may be something that is being blocked by your machine itself. frown.
