Starting to do some home work for moving my new forum from shared server space. Current space doing good for now, but anticipating that will not continue with growth of the board.

What I am looking is feedback on what host you are using, plan and cost. Level of your ability (like myself, I know just about enough to be dangerous when it comes to server management stuff), Customer service experience, length of time with that company.

Preference of Unix, Windows, etc. the good and bad of each.

If you have your own company, it might be better if you PM me so no one can say you are using this forum to build your business. I don't want to start any peeing matches just starting to do some research and making plans.

How difficult is it to manage

Thanks
Val

I am guilty of asking the same question here.
Problem comes from some people have a bad/good experience from the same host. Depending on what plan you have selected.
So all I can say is do some research.

I saw the other post, but it was dated a bit.

I guess what I was looking for was for people to post who they are using and I could look at that instead of the Zillion of web hosting providers out there. Happy customers are a good thing to know.

Sometimes there are quality companies that don't get all the hoopla, build pretty much on referral, not trying to be in the top 50 of search engines.

So I guess I will say that just because of some past experience LunarPages is not on my short list to even look at.

I know exactly how you feel. I have had to many bad experiences and was told one that if I can do better then go a head and do it.

So to make a long story short...

In 1999 I started out on my own and built my own rack and got a small net block and such and everything. Now I host all my own everything. I buy bulk bandwidth and do everything from the DNS servers down to the web, email, and such here in my house.

I use a Hostway dedicated server. It is expensive, but has been nearly flawless, and they have great support. On the other hand, the Hostway shared server folks seem to be completely clueless.

I use DreamHost

They are Awesome

I initially chose them because they are a Freedom of Speech Web Hosting Company

They will not suspend any account for any politically incorrect websites, as long as it's legal (ofcourse)

The price is low and they give you Unlimited Databases

I love it

They have their own Wiki Help Section and the Instructions for me have been great.

I just added their Referral Ad to the bottom of my Forum

$8.95 per month

$15 a month for a Virtual Private Server

You can't go wrong with that!

Well LG not so sure how dreamhost measures a VPS Price.
You got my curiosity up when you mentioned a $15.00 VPS

Some notes on there VPS Pricing are:
Ram usage
150 MB : $15.00 per/MTH 99% of all predominantly static sites
600 MB : $61.00 per/MTH A top 100 blog
1000 MB : $99.00 per/MTH A busy forum
4000 MB : $400.00 per/MTH A very popular web app
* plus shared hosting fee,
as low as $8.95/month

So using 150MB of ram the cost would be $23.95 per/MTH
Still very low but I don't think you would last very long with 150MB ram.

There also is a note about using mysql with a vps that I can't find out much on . Other that you get 20% off if you purchase both a vps and mysql service.

Them prices are for the DreamHost VPS ?

Ok, that's a bit confusing. One would have to do some research into this

Because they also have a Dedicated Server for $69 a month

http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting-dedicated.html

?

---

I know that they told me to install a Video Embedding Section that I would need a VPS at $15 a month because one must change the php and mysql server options

That's all I know about a VPS

150MB ram isn't really that much; I use about half a gig on my vps and 150mb doesn't even begin to cover usage from the Apache or MySQL servers...

We've been on Dreamhost since 2001 and besides a few hiccups have been excellent. Their control panel is top notch. Our forum is pretty busy with an enormous MySQL DB and I host a few other sites as well on our account, and we were on a standard shared account until this summer when we moved to a VPS. If you start suffering performance issues and are running multiple sites I do believe it makes more sense to have a couple shared account before moving to VPS, because our hosting bill has gone from ~$10/month to more then $60/month. VPS memory is priced per month BUT is prorated so if you move things up and down during the month you only pay for what you use, not for the most memory used for the month.

Dreamhosts add-ons are super cheap too, SSL cert for $15 is a steal!

Won't you take me to Funkytown?

I've found SSL certs for about $12, I'd have to look for a link somewhere though, not sure where it was
