We are trying to clean up and remove old inactive registered users. If we delete inactive users in our bbs, what happens to their old posts? Are they deleted as well?

when you delete a member you will be prompted with a couple of options.
Warning: Deleting a member can not be undone.
Do not delete this member.
Delete member and do not alter posts. Ownership will be set to Anonymous with an Anonymous name of: sb.
Delete member and delete all posts. If there are any replies to a post by this member, they will be attached to the post's parent. If the user's post is a topic, the entire topic will be deleted.
I have not tried to preserve a post in quite some time because I only delete members with 0 posts.
But I do recall that pre 7.5.6 did have a rare bug that option two would not keep the name but change it to Anonymous
So you may want to test it on just one member first

Okay, on a mass delete the message you will get before proceeding is:
IMPORTANT! Are you sure you want to delete the selected members? If you click 'Ok' the specified members will be deleted with no way to recover them. Any posts that they have made will remain intact, but will be set to owned by Anonymous.
So on a mass delete topics will all have the poster name of Anonymous. just fyi that is member 1. One at a time will keep the posters name if you elect that option.

No problem. The issue years ago was people did not want the posters name to change to Anonymous. If that is not a issue go for it.
Just make sure your member search query results are exactly what you want before you delete them ,because it can't be undone.

and of course, if you don't like the term 'Anonymous', you can edit the language file to say: 'Former member' or whatever you prefer.

I have the problem where I want to delete members and WANT the posts to remain and show as anonymous, but the single delete gives you the option : Delete member and do not alter posts. Ownership will be set to Anonymous with an Anonymous name of: Members username
How can I get around this? I dont need to mass delete.
Thanks

Try this, Build your list of members. select the check box by them member and use the options at the bottom: Action - delete All Members or Selected Members? - Selected Members (on this page)
You will get two warning prompts before it is deleted. The first promt states the action you want. The second prompt is your last chance to cancel warning.
Instead of opening the member details and select delete member.

For some reason each way to access a delete member function results in different options for deleting.
I forget myself which one does what.
It would be nice to have all options regardless of which way you do it.
Hopefully Rick looked at this already for version 8.
Time for a new keyboard again they are sticking really bad.
