Hi UBB experts,
I am the admin of a user board. One of the users has asked me to set up his signature and display name, which I am happy to do. When I went into his profile, I was unable to find his first name and only saw his display name.
As an admin, should I be able to find out his name that he registered with? Or is it just easier to ask him what name he wishes to use?
Thanks.

I don't quite understand the issue. Unless you are not sure you have the correct user. If you found the member using say the cp then maybe?
If you search for the user via the edit user or member number then it should be correct. Once you find the correct info. The member info area of the cp should show all the fields that are required when they register as well as all optional fields. If the display name is empty then maybe something is amis only via the registration settings. Or possibly you have a very old original site upgraded through the years and this is a old registration that is somewhat missing some data.
Either way if you search for the user number in the control panel it will result with the original ip for registration but not the original display name. if it is missing.

Thanks Ruben,
No, I think it is much simpler than that. This is a new user. Many of our users will have a display name like: xray23doc. This is likely their sign-in name, but when they ask a question or comment on something, since they donn't have a signature, we end up saying, "Hi xray23doc. Make sure to mark the radio buttons next to DEA number and License number." We would much rather refer to him as Mark.
My login name is peds1456 (made up), but my display name is not that, it is Bert. You can change your display name anytime but your login name or username is always peds1456. Just as your display name is Ruben, your username may be different for security or to meet the requirements of a login. You also have a signature "Blue Man Group"
So, in our example above, Marks's login name is xray23doc as is his display name. It would just be nicer if he used his real first name. And, maybe have a signature of:
Mark Radiologist Boca Raton, Fl
Since he doesn't know how to do it, he asked me to do it for him. This would be simple if I knew his first name. So, there are three options:
1. Somehow find his first name with the help of this forum if it is possible. 2. Teach him how to do it. Simple. 3. Or ask him his name in a PM or email. Even simpler.
I thought I would start with number one as my profile data lists all of that data.
I apologize profusely that I am making this so complicated. To be concise, as user wants me as the admin to change his display name and signature to his real name.
Thank you.

From what you have written above, and this user didn't enter his real name in the relevant field when registering, then the only solution to the issue is to ask him what it is. Changing his display name is a no-brainer which this person should be able to do in "My Stuff > Edit Profile". He may need a little help with the signature, which I am sure you can offer your assistance with that.

Thank you for taking the time to read my novel. Yes, this is exactly the problem. I will ask him. The problem is when you cross doctors with computers, you are bound to get issues.
Thanks Pilgrim.

And keep in mind, only one user can have a public name at once; so say you have two people named "Bill" only one can be "Bill" the other would have to be "Bill Somethingoranother"

That's good to know. What will happen if you put a second one in? Will you get an error message when you try to save the profile?

It should give you an error that it's already in use...

This was his first post on the user board:
As for the autosig with my first name - well with all my computer issues (knowledge), you may have to autolog in and change that for me. smirk
So, I went to his profile, Became this user, looked in the control panel, yet couldn't find his first name listed anywhere. I then came here and solicited your help and received very helpful answers from a few of your. Realizing the only way to do it would be to simply ask him I did. So after I PM him to ask him his first name, I received this PM back:
That was my attempt at humor. I can take care of that. thank you for the offer.
Well, his attempt at humor was not very good nor well taken. I spent a lot of my time trying to help him. You guys gave some of your time as well. The thing is if he knew me, then it may be funny. (actually doubtful). But, he was new to the board. I can't imagine joining this board on 8/7/7 (I guess that is a fairly long time) and attempting humor at Gizmo's or SD's or Ruben's expense.
Sorry about wasting your time. But, at least I learned a few things.
