I believe our board uses Greenwich Mean Time as its standard time. Then in preferences, you can change it to whatever time zone you are in. For instance, mine is set for - 5 hours to get EST.

The problem (and correct me if I'm wrong) is that this would depend on every user knowing to go into preferences and changing their offset.

Wouldn't it work better if it did this automatically by knowing the address I put in. I can see where that would be problematic as well, but it would seem easier than having everyone know to set their times. Also, does it matter if you put -5 vs - 5 ? (with or without a space).

Thanks as usual.

Happy Holidays!

Bert

Well the issue is you are on EST and the server may be in PST.
Then you have daylight savings which is not adopted everywhere even in the usa.
Then it depends on where your members are located at.
UK,Japan,NY,Texas???
Then one day you move the server to another timezone.

So you do have in the UBB to correct the time globally.
CP>General-Date & Time
Default Time Offset (Hours):

But then what do you pick, your time offset or???

Then there is no consideration for daylight savings again.
So 6 months out of the year some user would be off by a hour.

BTW,
I never have used a space on the time offset. So I would assume a space may not work well.

Wow, I wonder what everyone on here does. That does get confusing.

Hi Bert,
I set my time/date up as GMT. I've been running this software for 13/14 years and never once had a query (or a complaint) about it.

I guess users are happy to set their own time zone settings. smile

There you go Bert.

For me the only reason I would set the global setting would be for myself.
So I would not need to transpose the time to see if the server was off.
But I can do the same thing in mystuff.

Both options show the server time.

My server is set to be GMT and I have users offset from that; my sites are all configured to display using PST as the offset, but the forum default is GMT.
