Have now reloaded the header footer and header insert file so now I can see that. Community intro is there too but I can't see anything in the
» Control Panel » Display Options >> General >> primary and Date and settings tabs. PLEASE advice how to handle this. I have closed the forum.

That is not a good sign if multiple files went to 0 bytes. I would suspect that something happened on the server at the same time and your setting was a fluke. But anyway. Good thing you had backups of most of the important files needed. The control panel files are probably wiped also. That should be a easy fix. re upload the files in forum/admin. You can use a virgin copy unless you have modified the stock version.

Ruben I uploaded
community_intro.php
footer.php header-insert.php header.php
also I had to cut and paste the spiders list into the who's online box
Are to saying I need to upload more files? I mean cp files?
I looked into the error logs and i could see that there has been some out of memory errors but dunno if that was the glitch..

You have version 7.5.7 You could just unzip a new 7.5.7 file and upload and follow the upgrade procedure. Remembering to exclude the files noted in the upgrade manual. No need to copy over the install folder or run upgrade.php. Then at least you know all the stock files are restored back to normal. You have already uploaded the important files that are excluded in the upgrade document. The ones that are altered during use.
Instead of searching and replacing one at a time.
FYI, It is a known occasional bug that config.inc.php will get zapped. But all the other files should have been fine . That is why I feel it is a server issue.

I understand, Maybe its a good time to upgrade to 7.5.8 instead or do you see any problems with that? to keep 7.5.7 going I had to set back PHP to below 5.4.
I have hesitated to upgrade to 7.5.8 as i'm always uncertain that i do the right thing when upgrading..

Well upgrading to 7.5.8 is a good thing. There are some security updates. As well as some minor upgrades. And it should replace all the problem files. Just make sure you do a fresh download of the zip file. Because if you have a old copy ,it was probably updated since then.
And of course make a backup before you start.

Assuming you mean active text. That is usually in your config.inc.php file. Possibly the one you uploaded did not have any?
Might need to run rebuild content?

Don't know if this is OT or related...
For me it was Master settings > Primary settings | General | Censor | Stop spam (that I lost.)
I may post more on this tomorrow (it's late here now), but...
Two days ago, I decided to change my cookie expiry time (due to the problems with people staying logged in).
As a result, I was logged out of the admin CP. That was scary! I tried on different PCs - still the same. Then oddly enough, I managed to stay logged in long enough to notice that the cookie path was blank (instead of the default '/' ).
Further investigation revealed that a big 'chunk' of my config file was corrupted (actually - the array values were empty). This is clearly very different to the zero byte problem previously encountered.
It looks like most of my admin cp 'primary settings' were lost. However the rest of the file remained in-tact. At that point I was able to realise that the main administrator user was blank and was the reason for me being logged out.
I've been too busy to establish what is related in the corrupted array, but after my zero byte config.inc issues, I am feeling somewhat paranoid/ vulnerable to say the least.

Several of us have dealt with the 0 byte config file. And the server was blamed. Only SD fessed up and stated it was due to the method the config file was written to. And needed to be addressed. It is fortunately a rare occasion ,but when it happens it causes destruction to our site.

Several of us have dealt with the 0 byte config file. And the server was blamed. I first encountered the zero byte issue here. However, this is a little different, in that the contents of the array were wiped (as opposed to the whole file).

in my case several files was wiped but the config only data within some arrays was wiped.! Yes, that's my point mate. It's the first time I've encountered this 'variant' (in that only certain arrays are empty). I wonder when this started happening.
