Unable to edit Admin Forum permissions through Control Panel #255972

Our forum has been running for 6 months without issue, but on Wednesday, I attempted to give Admin permission to edit one particular forum. After that attempt, ALL permissions for the Admin save for "See Forum" were rescinded. And the "0" for all of these permissions was permanent. All attempts to edit permissions were futile.

In order to trouble shoot, I spent half a day trying to figure out what was prohibiting Admin from being able to edit these permissions:
  • Edited through individual Forum Permissions
  • Edited through Group Management

No matter what I tried (and I thought outside the box), when the attempted relevant "update" was submitted, the permissions field edits were not saved and once again every "1" was reset to "0".
Finally, I went into the server side php.my.admin and set relevant field values to "1" in the FORUM_PERMISSIONS table for Administrator GROUP_ID (=1) and that fixed the problem. But if I attempt to do anything through the control panel, these "1" values all revert to "0".

I've rechecked the file read/write permission codes and for the most part they match the recommended list. (I have to admit, it's not clear if directories within directories are supposed to share level when they aren't specifically listed.) The Control Panel Permission Checks all display the (OK).

I'm able to edit through php-Admin, but would prefer to know what's going on and fix it, as this is clearly a problem in the long-term!

Thanks for your help,

First a admin is a admin.
It is either all or nothing not by forum.
Second which method were you using to add the user as a admin?
It can be a two step process for secondary admins.
First by user to set as admin then by forum for permissions.

Now since I do recall a past bug where all permissions would reset to 0.
I don't recall what version it was, since I never had the issue.
But anyway what version are you using?

That could be this topic Ruben https://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ub...e-guest-permissions-update-ze#Post255176

It wasn't a permanent think only updating.
Ive not tried on the 7.5.8 version.

What version are you using with this problem ?

Actually the post I was thinking of was:
http://www.ubbcentral.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/253410/
If you read it all some of the content points to your php version.
But as I posted in that topic I never did have a issue with it.

Thank you for the response.
The version I am using is 7.5.8, which I assume is the most current. We just purchased the software in March.

The link you provided essentially describes the problem I am having.
I was referring to my own permissions as admin... when the zeroing event happened spontaneously, I had attempted to give myself editing permissions through forum settings of one particular forum, clicked to update permissions and when the screen returned, I found that I was suddenly unable to read any posts on any forums. At that point, I was unable to execute a permission change through forum settings or group settings.

I'll recheck the read/write file permissions, but I think those were correct.
I will also check to see if the hosting server updated the default PHP version lately... that sounds like the best clue.

Well possibly the config.inc.php file is corrupted.
It does hold the member number of the super admin.
And it is not uncommon that that file gets hosed.
Look for it in the includes folder.
Ftp to your site and view the file.
Usually when and if it gets hosed it is 0 bytes.
At the wiki we have a generic config file to copy and use but it would still need editing to provide your paths, passwords and member id.
http://www.ubbwiki.com/archive/view/1/ubb-threads-v7-config-file.html

As long as you edit the first few several lines and the sessions path.
You can fix the rest of the items by the control panel.
Just visit each option and even if they appear correct save it.
