This issue seems to have appeared in just the last few days. I am still using version 7.5.7 and some potential new members are unable to register. They are repeatedly getting a message that their chosen username is already in use (it is not). They say they have allowed cookies for the site.

Some can register without a problem but some can't. I haven't been able to duplicate the problem myself.

Has anyone else encountered this?

What browser are the affected users using? Any commonalities on their systems? are they running something that stops cookies, like a firewall or overzealous virus scanner?

I know some were using Chrome. They claim cookies are allowed but it could be a firewall or virus scanner issue I suppose. It just seems odd that this issue just suddenly started. Maybe some program just "updated" and they all use the same one.

I cannot, offhand, recall which virus scanner was, but it had a "security" setting which blocked the referrer variable from being populated and messed with cookie settings for "privacy"; it was quite overzealous.

I'm not quite sure what the wording was for the setting however.

Before I started the thread I was searching older threads to see if anyone else was having the problem. I came across a thread where you mentioned that the " Disable HTTP Referer Check? " box should be checked to take care of some other potential problems. So, I checked that box. Don't know if it would make a difference in this case but no harm in trying I suppose.

I find it odd that you state that the user name was already used and you say it is not.
There are two names that need to be unique.
User name and display name.
The new registrant may not notice the difference on the error message.
But there are separate messages for each.
But if you can get that info you can search for both in member management.
It could be the display name was taken and not user name.

For this part I can't see that as a browser/firewall/virus protection issue.

Also it has been suggested to turn off the referral check for several years.
With today's standards it causes more harm than good.
