I recall about eight years ago, there was an issue on the board where everyone had to log in twice to get on. It was a re-direction problem and my fixing of the issue on our board DUE to the help of this forum was the best fix for our board prior to one of the top dogs here installing one of the latest issues. Don't want to say who, but SD, Gizmo and Ruben among others have been instrumental in shaping our board.

Anyway, this is embarrassing since I am the admin, and my login is not saved. So, I have to login every time. Maybe this is a security thing or maybe osmething since the newest version.

I have deleted cooked, eaten cookies, done F5, tried all four browsers. Nothng changes it.

It is really frustrating when a new user needs to be activated, and I click in my email and have to log in just to approve them.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

What is your cookie expiration time set as?
Master Settings -> Primary Settings -> General Tab -> Advanced Options -> Cookie Expiration Time

Mine is set as "2592000" (30 days).

In version 7.5.8, the dev erroneously set the "hardcoded maximum cookie expiration time" to 7 days.

In version 7.5.9, the "hardcoded maximum cookie expiration time" was correctly reverted back to 365 days (1 year).

A discussion (and a manual fix) on this 7.5.8 issue was posted at -

This and several other bugs have been resolved in 7.5.9

Our setting is 30758400, which seems long enough.

if you're on 7.5.8, it doesnt matter what you input in to the settings box. 7.5.8 has a bug where the maximum will always be just 7 days - no matter if you tell it 30 days or 365 days.

Are you running 7.5 8 or 7.5.9? Your sig seems to say that you're on the bugged 7.5.8 version

7.5.8

But, I can log on, select save my password, and it asks me for my user name and password the very next time. Seems more like my browser. But, strange that I have issues with I.E., Firefox and Chrome on every computer.

As Isaac stated, 7.5.8 has a hardcoded maximum of 7 days, you cannot set a limit past 7 days on that version; if you want a longer value you'll need to upgrade to 7.5.9 or modify the value itself with the instructions on this thread.

If someone else logs in to your account, it invalidates your current cookies, and logs you out on your next visit. This happens not only when they use a different browser, but when they login with your password, or use the "Become This User" feature.

A few ideas of what you may want to try:

1. change your password.
2. be consistent about what browser / device you use to log in with.
3. check that you dont have any other user who can use the "Become This User" feature, such as other admins.

Thanks to both of you. I will try changing my password. When I became the admin seven years ago, I got rid of all the admins except for the host admin and one other. Neither would even know how to get to the control panel or log in as me. But, I won't be that naïve. But, they would have to do this every 10 to 30 minutes. I mean it happens every time. I will be consistent with the browser. Unfortunately, each browser has its advantages or some things you have to use a certain browser for.

But, I will give it a shot. I don't think it is the seven days. Because it happens much more frequently than that.

Bert,
I just logged into my account and I don't see a issue with login issues. At least with today browsing between forums.
Maybe tomorrow I will see something different.

However I do recall noting before that your session folder permissions are weird.
The folder is 777 with a owner group of 501.501
The actual session files are 600 with a owner group of 99.99.
It appears that the owner group is allowed access via your account but the file permissions are odd.
At least for newer files generated.

Doesn't really mean anything, the session files are likely created by apache and just isn't configured to change the owner to their user id; is actually pretty common, and shouldn't be an issue.

The only issue would be that it could make it so their ftp user couldn't delete the files created by the webserver; but fit the sake of argument we just assume the site management user can edit these files (generally the user would be in the webserver group).
