Are there any recommended maximums for:

Number of forums?
Number of Topics in a forum?
Total Topics across all forums
Number of Posts in a Topic?
Total Posts across all Topics in a forum?
Number of posts across all forums?

Trying to get an idea if there are any key numbers I should be monitoring.

We have a relatively small forum with less than 500,000 posts but there are a few threads with over 5,000 replies to a single topic.

I searched the UBB forums but did not come up with an answer.

It mostly depends on your server's hardware, operating system, also the setting you have for each of the services you're running; such as files and connections allowed open at once, and input/output data transaction sizes, etc.

If your server is using MySQL, have a quick read through:
https://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/table-size-limit.html

---
The effective maximum table size for MySQL databases is usually determined by operating system constraints on file sizes, not by MySQL internal limits. The following table lists some examples of operating system file-size limits. This is only a rough guide and is not intended to be definitive. For the most up-to-date information, be sure to check the documentation specific to your operating system.

Operating System -- File-size Limit
Win32 w/ FAT/FAT32 -- 2GB/4GB
Win32 w/ NTFS -- 2TB (possibly larger)
Linux 2.2-intel 32-bit -- 2GB (LFS: 4GB)
Linux 2.4+ (using ext3 file system) -- 4TB
Solaris 9/10 -- 16TB
MacOS X w/ HFS+ -- 2TB
NetWare w/NSS file system -- 8TB
---

Expanding upon that, here is another link that summarizes the first link a bit more:
http://nickduncan.co.za/maximum-mysql-database-size/

Quote
...my max database size can be as much as 281,474,976,710,655 bytes which If I’m not mistaken, equates to 256 terabytes. With this being said, I think we are going to run into system limitations rather than MySQL limitations...

Also turning on zlib and
stats at the bottom of the page:
Control Panel » Primary Settings
Show Debug Information in Footer?
Enable zlib Compression?
Zlib if installed will help speed up the pages
and debug info will show you if your queries are slow or slowing down.

just as a benchmark -- i support ( make mods and do other stuff for the client ) 2 forums that run on the same box

1 forum is 9million posts
other forum is 7million posts

server load never goes over 2, which really means it's twiddling it's thumbs.

server just loaded up on RAM ( 32gig ) and SSDs ( RAID ) for the OS / data.

so UBB is very efficient smile

Enabling Zlib Data Compression will result in smaller page sizes, but could add to overall server load.
An explanation of zlib data compression can be read at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zlib

Zlib Data Compression is unrelated to database size.

Thank you id242 and Sir Dude.

We are a small community that holds onto posts for a very long time since many have technical information that remains valid over time.

Many of our posts have inline images but that is just a storage issue.
