Go into your languages directory and then into the language you wish to edit. There will be a file called adduser.php that has the welcome text for new users.
Hi Scream, I tried this but it didn't work. essentially I wanted to take the standard one line welcome message and put a page of text with more description in it. after doing this I "became" several new users that had just signed up and there is now no message at all. is it not possible to get a page of text as the standard welcome message? how is this done? thanks, KC
Yes, you should be able to change this to whatever you want. Basically, what you are looking for is the $lang[WEL_MSG] variable in adduser.php. Make sure you edit the one that is in your standard language, proably english in your case.

when I try to vi the file it says at the bottom of the screen "adduser.php" [dos format].
is this the problem?
if so, how do I fix it?
I tried resaving the file with vi now that I know how to use it but it didn't change the format.
I think this may have occurred when I first set up the board and used notepad to edit the files.
I didn't know how to use vi so I went with what I knew.
hopefully this should be a thing of the past with the new design of 5.5.
