With all these updates has the process of creating forums and categories been steamlined? You create a forum on the older versions and it takes forever to set the permissions and other stuff. I don't like having to jump through hoops and take 10 minutes to create one forum.

When you create a forum, it will use the "New Forum Template" permission settings for that new forum.
Setup your "New Forum Template" first, and then all your newly created forums will use those settings as their default.
If you want each one of your forums to have a unique permission setting, you'd have to work with each forum separately.

The permission system in UBB.threads is one of the most granular of any forum title available; an admin can customize each forum down to some really fine grained options which other products just don't allow.
This can be daunting to some admins, which is why the forum template and copy permissions options were instituted; but it's not like someone is in there on a constant basis adding new forums and categories.
We will not be "streamlining" this process, ever, as it'd remove these options. The forum template and copy permissions options already trim time when creating new forums and categories, by allowing you to set a common set of permissions so you don't have to customize them every time you want to create a new forum.

What you could also do is use the mass permission copy instead of the template. It allows you to copy the existing permissions from any forum to the new one. Then just edit what may be unique to that forum. It is the tab to the right when selecting permissions-Forum in the cp.
I forget about this feature sometimes myself.
For example say you have 20 forums and you want to change a setting such as "Max file attachment size" Edit one forum with the new size then mass copy that forum to all the other forums or just a few that you select.
It saves a lot of time when you have many forums.
