Hello,
Our current forum version is 7.7.5

My host I keep sending error messages saying saying I'm on a very old VPS solution,
and my host recommend a migration and say

Quote
Your system is running centos7, and while not yet end of life a future migration to almalinux8 + cpanel should be considered. We would migrate everything to the new set up.

What do you tech guys recommend?
Should I await and first install version 8 when/if it is available or is it considered secure just to migrate to almalinux8 with 7.7.5?
at the moment we use
PHP Version: 5.6.40
MySQL Version: 5.7.41

I hope this is not off topic to much

Thanks for your advise

well
PHP Version 7.4.33 is what I am using on the same UBB version.
But still at 10.3.38-MariaDB-log.

Another site
PHP Version 7.4.33
MYSQL Version 10.3.37-MariaDB-log
Another site
PHP Version 7.4.33
MYSQL Version 5.7.23-23
Using UBB7.5.5 with no issues.

I have seen many sites that wait to upgrade either the server or the software and get left behind when it becomes difficult to upgrade.
Meaning the software is to old to run or the server is to new to upgrade.

My 2 cents is to keep your software and server up to date as high as possible in versions.
And not wait for UBB8 .
Besides server upgrades are always making the os bigger better faster.

You're currently restricted to running on PHP7 until Isaac finishes his work on UBB.threads v8.0.0

OK I'll ask my host to upgrade to PHP7 but not PHP8
I have no knowledge if I need to upgrade MySQL
Then next step to migrate to almalinux8 +

Any of you have any experience with almalinux8 +?

Giz,
To piggyback on this topic with your reply.
What about mysql 8 with UBB 8?
I have one site that they are asking for customers to upgrade to plus php 8.

Oh I found this info that I missed, it seems I cannot migrate to almalinux8 before UBB8.
see below I need to upgrade first to UBBThreads ver 8, PHP is ok with 7.2+ , MySQL needs version 8 so UBB8 will be needed first for me.

Upgrading a cpanel server to almalinux8 generally goes smooth. The method we uses to upgrade is as follows:

* set up a new almalinux8 server with cpanel (stable version)
* Match mysql versions, if possible. MySQL 8.0 is the lowest possible version supported on a new almalinux8 install but it is possible to go to mariadb 10.3 too.

* Match PHP as best as possible. PHP 7.2 is the lowest version supported by a new cpanel install. The new set up allows the choice php of 7.2,7.3,7.4, 8.1, 8.2 per domain in multi php.

* Once set up all accounts are copied over from the old server to the new server. Then data is kept in sync using rsync, and a time for a final change over is chosen. A final sync is done, and the ips are moved from the old server to the new server. The downtime is generally in total under 30 minutes.

Some things to keep in mind: Pop before smtp is off by default, but still can be enabled. SSL certificates are free using cpanel's autossl on the centos7/cpanel set up..

In development we're testing against MariaDB v10.4.27 but it should work just fine on the latest MariaDB LTS (currently 10.6, all of this is equivalent to MySQL8). We do not test against release candidates or alpha/beta releases.

You will want to run on the latest PHP7 build available to you until UBB.threads v8 is released. The newer the build the faster PHP scripts will process.

After asking my host why I only was able to upgrade PHP to 7.0 they changed the menu to show
7.0 upto 8.2 so I chose 7.4 and it updated to 7.4.33

It works fine but I’m a bit confused as after that one visitor said he couldn’t get pass the captcha when registering. I turned it off and when he registered there was no location and spammer check was not working either.

I chose not to approve as he also failed when answering the control questions at the registration.

Hopefully it will work for next registration or I’ll have trouble.

Install the latest version of the Test Script from UBBWiki and see what's missing from your environment; it's possible they just enabled options with defaults which could be missing required libraries such as fsockopen

Hi Giz,

I uploaded your latest test script

it reads now
Possible Problems
Possible problems have been detected, please see the individual messages below for more information.
It would seem that the PHP function "file_get_contents" does not allow remote content, please advise your host that you need the setting "allow_url_fopen" to be enabled; if it remains disabled you will be unable to use the Stop Forum Spam functionality. Please see UBBWiki: allow_url_fopen

Copy that to your web host service ticket, it's required for news retrieval, update notifications, stop forum spam

Thank you Gizmo
"allow_url_fopen" is now enabled and the error message is gone, Captcha seems to work again.
Hopefully that is the same with Stop forum spam.
