doesn't support relay mail?

All my users are seeing nasty messages because my email provider doesn't support relay mail as follows:
Warning: mail() [function.mail]: SMTP server response: 550 Not authenticated -- check your mail first in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\ubbthreads\admin\dosendemail.php on line 137

There is not much that can be done without your host either configuring your servers/sites IP or domain into an accept relay list.

This is generally not that difficult and can be done (should be done by) the server admin when they setup your site.

Have you contacted your host about this?

We have a local server box (Win2k server) here in house. Our email is provided by http://www.xo.com

I was informed by them after contacting XO that "Unfortunately our servers do not support mail relay".

Is there an inexpensive solution to this problem? Is there a server I can setup on our forum box for this?

I did some poking around on Friday, and since I was running Win2k server, I had access to the simple smtp server through IIS 5.

I changed my php.ini to use the ip address of the smtp server (it's own) instead of an external address. Rebooted and now my mail box is overflowing with admin emails!
