I have v5.4.4. The program, including the attachment feature, runs fine for some time until last week when it will not allow users to attach files anymore. The error message states: 'permission denied in /www/domain/forum/addpost.php on line 886. I do not recall ever changing the program files, so I don't know what may have caused th attachment not to work all of a sudden.
I made sure that the url and the folder location for attachments in config.inc.php are correct.
Does anyone know what the problem may be? Thanks!

It sounds like the permissions on the attachments directory got changed. It also could be the temp directory. You'll want to check the permissions on these directories and make sure they are writeable by the webserver (chmod 777 or 775).

Can you be more specific? I am a novice in all this.
I looked into the attachments directory, there are only two editable files, addpost.php and config.inc.php. Where exactly should I look for the permissions setting? How exactly should I change it?
I also do not see the temp directory. Where is it exactly? Thanks!

Ah, ok. What you are looking at is the directory itself. If you are a unix type system then you would need to use the chmod command on the directory. Something like 'chmod 777 directoryname'. The temp directory is specified in the php.ini file and might need the same settings.
