The license gives you the right to use the software - whether it is the Perl or PHP version. It's your choice. Both versions are available, just the PHP version is the one that will be the focus of future development.
As for selling it... I am not sure what our policy is on selling licenses. We have recently asked for licenses not to be sold. I'll make sure we can get some clarification on that issue.

Charles is correct; we do not allow the resale of either UBB or UBBThreads licenses. In the past, we've had a heck of a time with unscrupulous people claiming to "have a license," selling it to someone, running away, and then leaving the buyer in a fix when he finds out that he doesn't have a real license. Since there's not real way for someone to verify that the license they are purchasing is genuine, we decided to stop the practice, and it's now a part of the license agreement.
Regarding the switch to PHP, you can use your Member Area access to download the PHP version at any time. We'd be glad to help you with the transition in any way we can.
Please feel free to email me directly if I can help you with license issues/questions; I'm available!
Darn, one of the websites I'm working for was interested in only the perl version (PHP isn't installed on the server), but didn't want to pay full price for something that's never going to be upgraded again.

If you purchased your W3T license from Rick, then you should be able to transfer it (if you stop using the software), since you are still under the previous license, which, if I recall correctly, does not contain any language preventing you from such a transfer.
</font><blockquote><font size="1" face="">quote:</font><hr /><font size="" face="">And since perl seems to be going away can that license be upgraded or traded in for a php license ?</font><hr /></blockquote><font size="" face="">If you are interested in the PHP version of W3T, then I would recommend that you hang on to your license, since it also entitles you to use the PHP version of W3T. If you are a pre-Infopop license holder, you can also continue to update your software for a fee that is equal to 75% of the going renewal rate going at the time you renew. Your license terms do not change and you retain the same rights (multi-installs on one domain for example) that you had when you purchased W3T from Rick.
Let me know if you still want to sell. Perhaps we can arrange something <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />

And thank you also for demonstrating the need for a Post Preview feature in this platform <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
Derek: I also like to check my message before it's broadcast to all. I just use read the post after I've hit the "Post Now", and use that handy 'edit' button immediately, if there's a problem--same thing. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
The only way that editing a post right after posting it could be remotely similar to previewing posts is if the software doesn't display posts that are being edited, is this the case?
How hard could it be to add preview to opentopic? How can you possibly charge what you do for such a feature poor piece of software? I'm really amazed that you have any customers for it at all!
Perhaps you haven't seen some of the things that it can withstand. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
Do not judge a book by its cover. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/wink.gif" />
Re: post preview / edit - here on OT there's a grace period where the edited note won't appear so you can do last minute edits. Post preview has been a long time wish, and is coming to UBB in the next major release. Dunno about OpenTopic though.

OpenTopicâ„¢ is designed to comfortably handle millions of users and messages. Companies that demand that kind of performance and scale, as well as appreciate the fact that it is a hosted product, like it quite well.
That said, as it is only a year old, we continue to aggressively build-in features and functionality to make it even more fun to use.
I do admit that it's fast and scales well, but I'm judging this book from the inside, from the most relevant perspective: that of a user. I didn't realize it was so new either.
What it's really missing besides preview, is some kind of threading, whether the w3t flavor or the "flat threaded" stuff that slashcode does.
Anyway, you should add a little "totals" row after the post listing like I did to w3t (my hack shows total threads and total messages on the main index).
Just to clarify, if I know someone who currently has a PHP contract (i.e. before the takeover), and is not currently planning on renewing their maintenance, then I can negotiate with them a deal to buy their license and be treated under the same terms that existing license-holders retain. This is specifically because the contract pre-Infopop allowed users to do so, and those contracts are all honored by Infopop.
Is this correct?
Thanks,

Yes, Infopop is honoring all terms of the existing licenses, and if Rick was allowing them to be transferred under the old terms, then we are abiding by those terms for the old licenses.
