Hi--

What are those instant gremlins? They don't seem to go in or on a message if you click on them, and you cannot drag or drop them.

And how do you get smileys in a post?

Are you using Netscape, by chance?

Right now there are some issues with the CSS our header is using that causes Netscape to get confused and break links and cause Javascript items such as the Instant Graemlins and Instant UBBCode to stop working.

Nope. MSIE 5.00.

My question was how to use it. Perhaps I am doing something wrong....

And the smileys question?

dgermann: you need javascript enabled

I think we have a fix coming out today for the header/footer info that might help this issue. We'll try it out and if it doesn't work, we'll try something else.

To answer the smiley question...assuming it's functioning as it should, you should be able to click on one of the icons (at the point in the text where you want it to appear) <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />
You will then see the code (not the graphic) in the text box. Once you click "post now", the code is converted, and the graphic should appear in your final post. If it doesn't turn out the way you wanted, you can always click the "edit post" icon and change it.

I'll post here once we change the header/footer, just so you can test it again.

oh btw: i posted some jacascript in the old forums which allow you to insert the tags (or smilies) at the cursor position. it would be nice if this was possible to do here too.

Thanks for that link, MarcM.

We've looked at implementing similar code in the past, however we've always had browser compatability problems. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

dgermann - do you have Javascript turned off, by chance?

Ankh, that's great! Thanks for letting me know.

I've pointed out the Javascript to our OpenTopic guru, to see whether it might be usable for us, and I'm sure the gang at UBBThreadsDev will be all over it for the new dev forums. (Which I think are just about ready...I think there are some non-forum related logistics being finalized, but maybe one of the guys involved could post an update here...)

Allen went out of town for the remainder of the week, on short notice, so we're down a whole person, and one of my personal servers was cracked the other day, so I've been spending the evenings cleaning that up & starting over...

Lack of time. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" /> It will take a little longer than we thought to put the website together, etc.

I am not sure if Javascript is enabled in msie 5.0. I checked and found some java stuff under vm, one of which is on (java logging) and one is off (java console). Where else to look?

And isn't javascript one of the ways it is easy to get viruses? Seems to me I saw an alert on this recently....

MSIE on Windows maybe.

It might be called Active Scripting, or somesuch. It might be under security rather than the rest of the options...

Again, isn't Java a virus prone thing?

Mine says scripting of java applets are enabled, active scripting is disabled.

So what do I do?

This is a frustrating board to use. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="images/icons/frown.gif" />

After all this above us.....can you clarify the question?

Sounds like you might need to enable the active scripting, which is under the Internet Options (or maybe Tools), found under "View" in 5.0.

At any rate, I want to make sure we are answering the right question! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Doug: the word "Java" applies to a language, which we use to drive the board. JavaScript, on the other hand, is a lightweight scripting language (client side), which is used on the instant smilies and the other goodies you see when you post. The have nothing to do with one another. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Thus, you should be able to enable scripting while disabling applets, and be perfectly safe. This should also rectify the problem with the board. We do need to know what browser you're using so that we understand your particular challenges.

Lori--

Does anybody know the answer? How? Apparently nobody has ever used MSIE 5.0 here. How do I get this board to work on such a plain vanilla browser?

My browser's help function was corrupted on install, and there is no way to fix it.

So I need help.

I tried to add this site to "Restricted sites" so I can just change its setting to allow what you told me to change, but it would not allow it, because your site is not https://.

So what now?

Can't you make your site work for everybody, without requiring special settings like this? This is still frustrating.

Java is not virus prone - there's no way for a Java program to do anything to your system without Java itself asking permission.

JavaScript is not virus prone.

VBScript, Microsoft's combination of Javascript and Visual Basic features, IS virus prone (and is the force behind such nasties as Melissa), but only on Windows machines, and then mainly in email.

In other words, you are 100% safe runing scripts in IE on a Mac.

As for adding us to the less restricted group... I'm not sure about Mac IE, but in Windows IE, you can optionally turn off the requirement that the trusted site be https...

I am running Windows MSIE 5.0, not Mac.

I have added this site to restricted sites and am getting this stuff below to work now. Not sure what I did....

But how will this allow me to login without posting? I asked that question in another thread, but some sysop got mad at another poster and locked the thread before I ever got an answer. Can you help with that?

Now it says I am not logged in, but I do get the yellow light bulbs on the mail. What is going on?

I did try to login, one time it did nothing, the second time it sent me to a new welcome screen.

And now, since I logged in, it does not remember my name or password, and so is asking for it again before I post this message.

Strange....

So that means logging in loses the login info. Hmmm.... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

The login links, the lightbulbs, and the rest of those features are all Javascript.

If you've added us to the proper zone, they SHOULD be working properly.

This entire time, I thought you were on a Mac, not a PC.. That explains some of the confusion.

Doug - <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> + <img border="0" title="" alt="[Mad]" src="images/icons/mad.gif" />

I manage our customer experience and our support team. I'm reviewing your question and I'm checking out your site right now to help provide you a sufficient answer.

Part of your question is related to a usability issue, namely "learnability". In other words, sometimes features need "hints" or instructions to aide users in using features.

Let me take a look and get back to you in a few minutes.

Instant Graemlins...(inserted by point and click - this inserts them at the bottom of the text reply box, from which I cut and paste them in places i want them).

Doug,

It appears many questions have surfaced for you since the original question.

So, your questions:
1. How to use instant graemlins?
It appears you've learned how to do that because I see several posted. And, Rosemary provided details on how to use the graemlins. Looks like you're good to go there.
2. Is Javascript on? You discovered, yes.
3. Is Javascript virus prone? Answer is no.
4. Next question - honestly, it's hard for me to figure out what your question is now. Hmmm...puzzled look on my face <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" /> .
Is it related to login?

Our best bet is to talk by phone. I will email you with my contact information.

Celeste
<img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="images/icons/cool.gif" />

BTW - saw on your board you liked the book Who Moved My Cheese. That is an awesome book.

Celeste--

Thanks for taking a look.

Take a look at my post dated posted 14 Nov 01 06:08 PM, and the couple that preceded it.

I can logon only by posting a message. I can sometimes get smileys to work by typing e-mail smileys, like colon-dash-close parens.

But when I go back one screen to the transitions question list of posts, it says I am not logged on. When I try to logon through your logon link, it throws me out to some screen that I cannot figure out where I am, and never logs me in.

I do get some lightbulbs after going through the post a message routine, but not by the logon routine.

I never get a logoff routine, which scares me that someone else is possibly using my logon.

But when I go (I think this is how I remember it) to post another message it does not remember who I am.

So the question is, how do I make your stuff work as it is supposed to? Is MSIE 5.5 on a pc such an unusual set up that nobody can give me a straightforward, go here, check this, go there, click that answer? Instead, it is "guess maybe you should turn on [insiderscodewordthatIcan'tdecipherandmaybeneverheardofbefore]"--without telling me where to even start looking.

In short, if the site is that difficult to set up for, then should there not be a tutorial on the main screen telling people what to turn on and off, and where it is located on some common browsers?

So to say where I am, I have you set up as a restricted site, and only by doing that did I get any of the stuff to work, as stated above.

hi doug,

I just left you a voicemail so we can talk. I have completely read through your questions; sometimes what someone reads and what's intended can be confusing to the viewer.

I'll try again on Monday. Have a great weekend.
