Hi all,

Just upgraded from UBB to Threads. We did the conversion for the members and posts and we now have a basic board.

However, a few glitches have come up.

!st on the list is we have three Admins. One of them now seems to be 'locked' out. I have called up his details and tried to log-in as him but to no avail. He was on previously but now we just can't get any further. . .any tips?

Secondly there are loads of users who are recognised by the system (i.e. they show up if searched for as mambers) but they can'tget access. I know many of them are OK with ccookies etc so it seems to be a system error. I presume that the parsing of info from the original UBB is safe and there are no problems.

Please advise as I need help to calm down my staff!!!!

Cheers

I would ask those users who cannot login (Admin included) to provide to you the error message when they try to login.

It may be that they just need to clear cookies off the old domain or site and then login again. IE 6 will also not handle cookies well by default.

There is no error message.

If I try to log-in as my fellow admin (after logging out myself) I enter the details as they 'should' be and it just takes me back to the main page as a guest. . . not logged in.

After looking at his profile the 'hidden' characters of his password have been increased and I can assure you no one did this. . .

If I try to change his password and click submit and check again, the password has not been changed or updated. . . if this is happening to him then I suspect this is the problem for all those having problems. . .

I have also pasted this to tech support and not even got back a mail response. . .

Any ideas????

You are seeing 'many' characters because that is the encrypted password. You will always see 13 characters after clicking on edit profile.

Thanks Razvan, I did not realise. . . however, when I change his password via the admin panel. . . and it accepts it. . . I log out and then try to log in as 'him' with the new password. It does NOT let me in. After hitting enter it just takes me back to the main page as a guest. . .

This is weird!

If you have access, try running this sql command:
select U_Password from w3t_Users where U_Username='insert_troublesome_account_name';
After that change the password as you were doing before and run the sql command again. Are the results different?

If you have 'pasted this to tech support' and not received a response I apologize. What you will need to do for us is to fill in a Trouble Ticket for us so that we can gather up what we need to properly assist you out of the gate.

We generally respond to email requests on complex subjects with the link above <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

So - if you can fill that in for us we can have a more serious look. Right now I am suspecting a corrupted cookie.

Ahhh - I have just found we somehow imported 'groups' in three times. . . maybe this is the problem?

How can I delete these extra groups?

Any ideas?

There is a "Rename a Group" setting which you can do - what I would do first is to rename the two extra groups and then see how it effects people therin... Perhaps we can determine a good SQL query for you to delete the other group names without effecting the people who are now equal members in three groups.

OK. will try to rename some and test. If it works I presume I can then just delete the renamed group?

I still can't see why it would effect the cookie though. . . but I suspect you have a reason.

I have about 20 regular members locked out and some mods - that lead's me to believe there are droves of others I don't know about.

Had a late automated response from tech support but am waiting.

Apart from this. . starting to piece it together. . . nice product - I can see many hours of playing ahead <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

The group with the highest permissions takes precedence so there could be a conflict when the groups have the same names... It's hard to say right offhand <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

This may sound really stupid, but have them check the date on their PC. Seen that make a difference with the cookie.

Hi Brett,

OK, we deleted the offending groups and all was well i.e. the board continued to work OK.

However the members I am having difficulty with continued to have a problem.

This is to confirm my actions. . . I pulled up their profile and have changed passwords in case they were wrong. This was accepted.

I then logged out and tried to enter using their details. After giving their name and pass I get thrown back to the board as a guest not logged in.

If I pull up their profile and try to enter as an admin 'as them' using the facility, again it does not let me.

I have tested with other members and the pass facility and access for an admin to enter as them works, so it is down to a problem with a few individual users. . .

Weird <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

I did place a question about this to support but although I got a ticket back late I do not have anything else. . .

Help! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Okay - can you ask that on that ticket I either be assigned to it or looped in on the discussion?

I would like Rick Baker to have a look at it with us and on the ticket we can do so.

Did anyone ever get this one figured out?

I am a user on a brand new 5.5.1 board on http://www.fishingwarehouse.co.uk/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?Cat= .

The board admin is out of ideas and short on time so suggested I pose the question here.

I can create a user account and log in once. Never again with that account.

IE6 and the problem started a weel or so ago on an XP Pro machine at home. Small network run by a LinkSys router/switch with DSL broadband.

Work was fine until today when it started the same behavior. IE6 again but 2K Pro and a totally different network arrangement.

I get various script errors depending on what I am trying to get the problem fixed. For instance, put in an account name and the "forgot my password" thing.

Help greatly appreciated. I am now up to 7 accounts and starting to get really confused. Plus it is a royal pain to figure out which posts are "really" new since my last logon.

Me = nvail@ctc.net at home or newt.vail@pmusa.com at work.

Board admin = Stephen Lane admin@fishingwarehouse.co.uk in case there is something he would need to check.

BTW - have tried all variations on cookie settings, security settings, and have done the "flush" thing for cookies and cache. Doesn't help.

What does your cookie path look like? It should only be "/" or just blank.

If the path is bad the cookie is set for the bad path and boom - it won't ever work again <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="images/icons/smile.gif" />

Hi Brett,

I just checked - the cookie path is set to blank. . . which is OK. We don't have any other problems with other users gaining entry now.

This is really one I can't understand.

So is it limited to your specific machine or just machines in your office/intranet?

Newt,

When you login with an account do you change your display preferences? If you change your Starting Page to the Main index instead of the control panel this could be the problem. Some servers can't set the cookies properly when the starting page is changed. I'm restructing this code for 6.0 so it will work on all servers but this might be your problem.
