(I hope I get this right) I have been told that Redhat is no longer going to be a free supported software. If so, what do the gurus at Infopo recommend changing to that will be compatible with UBBB Threads??
How's all this "hopie-changie" working out for you???

It's my understanding that you can either choose Redhat Enterprise, or go with the Fedorah (sp?) project, which is free.
Either way.... "RedHat" is just kind of like the brand name. It's all still Linux, so it doesn't matter. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I believe Musky's actual question should be....what is the actual preferred platform that Infopop does their development on? When Musky first went to threads his site was on a Solaris 8/Sparc machine and we went through a big ordeal related to performance. Ultimately nobody was able to pinpoint what the problem was but they claimed that it "should" work but since Infopop didn't develop on Solaris/Sparc they couldn't comment directly on what may be wrong so we asked..."what platform does Infopop develop and run their apps on?". We figured that obviously the products have been tested and known to work with a certain number of users in some environment so we'll just mimick that environment. At the time Infopop stated that Redhat 7.3 was their preferred platform so we migrated the site to a faster Redhat/x86 machine and that resolved the problem....
....so now our question....Since Redhat Linux will no longer be a supported platform after 2/04, what OS will Infopop be using as this preferred platform? While the Fedora project will still be free, Redhat will not provide any support nor a method to regularly patch the OS via the Redhat Network based on what we've read. The Redhat Enterprise Linux product line provides these features but they come with an associated cost. SuSe or another varient could be a viable option but we are interested to know what platform Infopop is adopting or recommending.

Currently we develop on both Windows and on Redhat 7.3. We will shortly be trasitioning to RedHat 9, then to Enterprise. We don't have a particular recommendation as to your platform of choice. UBB.threads should run on any UNIX/Linux or Windows platform.

Thanks David. I agree that ubb is capable of running on any machine that can run php & mysql. We were just curious as to what platform Infopop will be using inhouse to perform any development and baselining with so that when rolling out a new system we can say that with the proper tweaking and certain settings Infopop has verified that they can run x number of users on a certain piece of hardware so that we have some basic guidelines to follow. Out of curiousity....why the transition to Redhat 9 prior to Enterprise?

From my experience UNIX/Linux systems are more scalable regarding mysql + php. I always recommend this enviroment as a web- and dbserver unless you need ASP-support or something else that is limited or works better on windows.
