I have a heavy load on my server so my server people suggested I get a second server and set up my forums Mysql database on it. After many days working on this here are their responses:

Hi Rick, I had masood working on the MySQL as he is more knowlegeable about it than I and he is saying that its a problem with the forums scripts. This surely throws a wrench in the works. He is suggesting you contact the developers of the script and see if they have any updates or fixes so remote databases can be used.
Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
Regards, Les

2006-01-13 / 13:05:37 Your forum is unable to work with a remote mysql database. You will need to check with developers of your forum software and find a fix for that. I have changed the mysql back to local server.
Let us know if you need further assistance.
Regards, Masood
They previously suggested I move my forums over to vBulletin.
What can we do to get this to work?

remote databases work well with ubb.threads, I work with a site now who hosts their scripts on one server and have their mysql db on another. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Yes, the forums are a bit slow - support is spread across several sites for the different scripts/apps.

To use a remote database, just change the database connection settings in the configuration file. Hostname, user, password
Or are they talking about a replication setup? If so, feel free to contact me. To use a replication, some changes to the code will ben necessary.

Look at your config file.
Where it says $config['dbserver'] = "localhost";
Change that to whichever server they want you to connect to. It's also in your control panel. It is also in your control panel, under database host.

Thanks David, Astaran & Allen, Here is what my server guys tell me: This still doesnt explain why UBB works fine for about an hour on the remote server and then decides to error out. We did exactly as the person you quoted mentioned and still after an hour of successfull board operation the errors begin.
It did seem to work fine for about an hour and then the boards would go down with errors that say the following:
Warning: mysql_query(): Unable to save result set in /home/fishingm/public_html/forum/mysql.inc.php on line 107 SQL ERROR: Database error only visible to forum administrators Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/fishingm/public_html/forum/mysql.inc.php on line 133
The above came up in the forums after an hour or so of smooth operation with the remote server.

Edit mysql.inc.php and change $showerror = 0;
to $showerror = 1;
Doing so will display the mysql error message to all users, so that your server folks will the what's the exact problem.

Do you use mySQL 5.x on the new databse server? Back to 4.x <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> I run my my forum on a server and the databse on another server. This works very well.

Zarzal is right - 5.x is still formally unsupported, so if you're running 5.x, you might try 4.x instead.
