currently on my site ppl can send messages using the Infopop messenger tool, but there seems to be no way to notify them when their inbox has a message. Members are complaining that its a pain to constantly check it (its a pretty active site) - is there a JAVA or Ubb solution to this? is it already in the new version?

Each user can opt to receive notification of new private messages by e-mail by toggling the setting in their profile. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

but i guess i would prefer a "you got mail" type of notification as well, since we don't use the UBB profile management option - we have our own registration/profile pages. thanks tho - any other ideas? HOw about this - where is the code in UBB that states when an inbox has a new message (it must be a 0 or 1 value field)? Perhaps I can create something based on that value toggle.

There isn't a field in the member profile. You'd have to look at the relevant file under the pm_* subdirectories and scan the status of each message. (I don't remember off hand which directory it is)
