Conversion of 5.x static links to 6.x cgi links? #86602

Is there a default way people are handling the conversion of old flat .html links to the new .cgi links? I am referring to links within messages to other threads.

The upgrade procedure to go from UBB5 to UBB6 is supposed to take care of conversion. The HTML files are no longer used but the cgi thread files remain about the same. As far as I know, links within the text are not converted, but if you leave the old HTML directories in place the direct links to them should still be valid.

Hmmm. I guess I could do that, but I was hoping to actually fix the problem directly, rather than applying a long-term bandaid.

However, if that's the proper substitution, I suppose I can just slap something together with awks...I'll just have to be very careful.

I was just wondering if someone hadn't done this already.

That's the only solution I came up with.

You could easily modify it to point to a page saying "we've moved - update your bookmarks" and provide the correct address, instead of doing a straight redirect..

Graeme: That's the only solution I came up with.

Well, clearly, you can just edit the cgis and redo the links...I just figured this would be such a common problem that someone would have a little script pre-written.

By the way, I'm not talking about bookmarks and stuff, I'm talking about all the messages on the forum itself that have links to other threads in them.

I agree that translating the links in the .cgi thread files is a better permanent solution.

I don't know awk, but it probably wouldn't be hard to write a Perl script to do that.

The redirection might be worthwhile doing as well, to deal with bookmarks to old threads.

Oh, I was thinking bookmarks.. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I doubt it be rocket science to write a 20-30 line script to go through all the thread .cgi files and do a mass search and replace.

You might want to see if there's anyone at ubbdev.com who has such a tool. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
