Over the last few months, our Disucssion Board has ground to a halt. People have tried getting on at various times of the day and night and it's just not worth the hassle of clicking and then going for a coffee each time.

Our host, http://bluegenesis.com, says they cannot offer any support as it is a text based board that does not take advantage of MySQL database. But we have members on other UBB boards that have a lot more traffic than ours, and they are not experiencing the same problem.

We are running UBB.classic 6.5.0 and now have 2 choices: get different boards; find a new server. Unless any brilliant minds on this list can help us out! Thanks.

1- Are you running the UBB Accelerator?
2- How many page views are you getting per month (current figure would be sufficient)
3- Have you reviewed https://www.ubbcentral.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/9/57.html
4- Do you have recent visitors enabled
5- Do you have any forums with > 3000 topics?
6- How many members are registered on your boards?

1- Are you running the UBB Accelerator?
No.
2- How many page views are you getting per month (current figure would be sufficient)
Pageviews (10/2004): 1162

3- Have you reviewed https://www.ubbcentral.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/topic/9/57.html

Just read it now. I take it that it is not yet available?

4- Do you have recent visitors enabled
Not sure. Where would I find that?

5- Do you have any forums with > 3000 topics?
21 forums. The largest is: 2729 (topics) 21846 (posts). One other near that. Rest in hundreds.

6- How many members are registered on your boards?

Members: 1404

Turning the Accelerator on always helps.

Are you sure that there are only 1,162 pageviews this month? That's less than 50 a day. Go to the board and click on the Today's Active Topics link - how many topics are there?

A board with that little traffic shouldn't be putting a dent in any server.

I just turned the Accel. on. We'll see what happens. Checked page views again. This is from the control panel. Now it reads:

Pageviews (10/2004): 79

Could there be something else going on messning up the UBB?

Onour Web host, our daily ave. for page views is: 4665 this month, and 75% or more of our site traffic is the UBB boards.

And the active topics count?

Something smells fishy here. Have you had errors relating to missing members, corrupted topics, etc? The counter file rarely resets itself, and when it does, there's something seriously wrong.

Your board seems to work real fast for me.. I just viewed and well its fast.. However, even with UBB Acclerator I notiece that mine is a bit slow only when clicking on the board title link at the top of the forum tables. My site message board opens up inside of a frameset html ( frame 1="menu and frame 2 ="main"

I find that is very useful as all pages on my site seem to open up faster inside the frame. This is because of the html properties of an index.htm file for homepage containing a frameset html generated codes body tags and menu tags. The target of each page in my UBB board is targeting the frame set.

Thats not what your problem is though.. My next question for you that I think others here who want to help you with this is: how often do you do your UBB matience cycle? Remember, you must clear cached pages once and while. Most importantly the UBB feature in the UBB cpanel homepage that is a fast link to "close board" is there for a reason. Conversly the defult message wordlet that notifies members and guest that your UBB is temporarly closed for routine mantience. It would appear at the number of members and high amount of post you have you do have a "Performance hit" problem!

We have not had errors relating to missing members, corrupted topics, etc. Just a painfully slow board. Excruciatingly slow. Now and then it speeds up. But mostly it's slow and getting slower.

I clear cache once or twice a week, prune posts now and then. Don't know what other maintenance I might perform? I deleted a whole lot of PM's a while ago. Any other suggestions?

Answering the questions I've posed above that you haven't would be a suggestion. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

1- Are you running the UBB Accelerator?
Yes. We are now. Took a moderator an hour to grant access to four members today. Even the Admin panel is sloooow.

2- How many page views are you getting per month (current figure would be sufficient)

Total Active Topics: 19 - We have 19 active topics today; took 2 miniutes from the time I clicked on the link to the time the page displayed. We sometimes have two pages. Seldom more.

Today it is showing:
- Pageviews (10/2004): 725
I'm not sure what this is:
- Cache hit percentage: 93.93%

4- Do you have recent visitors enabled

Don't know what this is. Where would I find out?

5- Do you have any forums with > 3000 topics?
One close to it; another at 1,000+

6- How many members are registered on your boards?
Members: 1407

> Have you had errors relating to missing members, corrupted topics, etc? The counter file rarely resets itself, and when it does, there's something seriously wrong.

No error messages.

Thanks!

FYI: I cleared cache:
Cache hit percentage: 90.62%

Also, we have 29 forums; PM is enabled; users can post avatars (we make sure they are thumbnails); HTML is turned off....

With 20 active topics, I'd peg your expected pageview count at around 100,000-125,000. That's not a large board in the least.

Citing the general slowness, both on the frontend and backend, I'm going to say that your host is at fault here. The general slowness tells me that this is a case of the server simply being overloaded with requests, meaning the UBB scripts never get the time needed to run...

From our host's tech support:

The ticket canadianactor.com, regarding the bulletin board, has come back from our Tier 2 Support Team. It has been indicated that we can advise you nothing as long as you are using test files to store data. Our only suggestion is to use a database to avoid this slowness. The ticket is now closed.

*****

I presume there is nothing we can ask our host to do, nothing that they have not thought of that they might be able to implement? If that's the case, we will have to look at another Board or another host. It is, sadly, no longer functional to keep running this board the way it is going.

Your host is using a database as a cop-out rather than bothering to investigate a general performance issue - you would be best off ditching them entirely, as it's likely that performance with a PHP/MySQL board (such as UBB.threads) would not be spectacular either.

*swoops in beating Gizzy*

Hostnuke.com is the host of my site, is very friendly with UBB.classic owners, and is quite affordable

We have moved to www.pair.com and (almost) all is fine. The speed issue is no longer an issue. We have a search problem, but I will post that in a new message. Thanks for all your help. If you are looking for a host for your UBB boards, DO NOT look at www.bluegenesis.com.
