Rebuilding the member files! Is that the same as starting over??

No. It only rebuilds the index files, not the actual data.

I did it once myself, and deleted all the members log ins, I had to add them from the members files and added them back in in the memberslist.cgi in this format:
members usid|!!|00000002 (member #)
if your listed you'll see it listed in there. when finished check the membertotal.cgi file and make sure you that number represents the amount of members you have listed.

And if that happens, that's a sign of other problems.

That's why you are advised to BACKUP YOUR MEMBERS DIRECTORY *BEFORE* doing things like rebuilding the stat files, and making sure you have enough disk space!
