I am implementing a Developer Network where our users must logon before accessing our site. I would like to only have this single authentication and then let the users see and post only to forums that match their security level (Customer, Partner, etc). We are using a java-based, directory-level security servlet with Apache on Sun Ultra's.

Can the above be acomplished with UBB? If so, how?

The best (read: easiest for you) way to do this would be to alter your system to store copies of user information in the UBB member file format. You can then set a user cookie containing the username and password information - when they come to the UBB, they will be ready to post with that information.

If you are going to use UBB6, you might want to try and replace its single, centralized member authentication routine with one that can interface with whatever database system you have set up to store the member data.

I need a solution that requires users to register once and authenticate once on my main site, and then have these credentials automatically used by UBB.

Is this possible?

Not directly in UBB - no matter what you do will require custom scripting, be it altering UBB to read your membership files or altering your system to read UBB's.
