Okay, first off, here's my cp.

http://www.ubb.org/ubbboard/cp.html (quirky URL isn't it?)

The default instruction of /domainname/ubb/cp.html just wouldn't work for me, that being because the ubb folder was defaulting back to the index. So I experimented with /ubbboard/cp.html, and 'lo and behold it worked.

Then, General Settings...gah! I've read all of the General settings problems on this fourm I could find quickly. Done what was asked for it. Still I get the Page not found.

So then I see that the path to Perl 5 may not be set up correctly. Server administrator tells me that they have everything to run this board. Try out the test and see if it works before shelling out the money for it. Sound advice, that's why I like that server. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Then, I also read that the scripts may not be set up correctly. I ASCII'ed each of them with my CuteFTP. (What is this WS FTP stuff? I don't see that anywhere on mine)

So I then asked the admin to let me know if I can use custom scripts. Still awaiting word on that, but shouldn't take too long. I'll guess it's a yes.

Dumbfounded and UNIX stupid here. Need what help I can get.

Thanks!

Your BASE HREF for all the cgi files in cplinks.html is set to http://www.ubb.org/cgi-bin/ however it doesn't appear that the files are there. Did you perhaps put them in a subdirectory of the cgi-bin? Can you print a DirInfo from WS_FTP and post the results here of your root directory and the contents of the cgi-bin?

Certainly. Although I'm not exactly sure what you mean by root directory. I believe that is the /htdocs type area? And there are a ton of files in that section.

But here's what is in the /cgi-bin

Name

cpanel.cgi

cpanel3.cgi

poll.pl

ubb_library2.pl

Sorry, what I meant by "root" was your home directory as seen as your home directory via the Internet.

What we really need is a DirInfo from WS_FTP. That command prints the names of the files and their actual permissions. Don't just copy of the info from a directory listing in your FTP sofware as some don't show the actual current permissions, but rather the previous permissions.

The problem I have right now is I don't know the url to your cgi-bin. The one set as your BASE HREF does not appear to be correct. How would you type in your browser window to access, lets say cpanel.cgi? Would you type http://www.ubb.org/cgi-bin/cpanel.cgi or http://www.ubb.org/ubbboard/cgi-bin/cpanel.cgi or what?

Hm. First off I'll need to know what WS_FTP is, where it could be, and then I should be able to provide that.

I know the CHMOD for the .cgi's are all set to 755 as stated in many of the other threads.

Is it possible that access to the cgi-bin being denied could be the problem?

The web address for the cgi-bin is www.ubb.org/cgi-bin/ But when you put this in, an error stating that permission to enter is forbidden.

Let me know what the WS_FTP is, and I'll get that information to you quick.

WS_FTP is an FTP program. You can download the LE version from http://www.hotfiles.com

Getting a 403 on the cgi-bin is a normal occurance. The problem is, are the UBB files in the cgi-bin or a subdirectory of the cgi-bin?

Also, could you post a url to your web host's site. They may have a cgi faq that might shed some light on any special setups they have, such as cgiwrap.

That's what the DirInfo gave me. 771? Shouldn't be, CuteFTP keeps showing it as 755.

Now then, for the URL to my webhost's site. It's not a commercial server, so there is no particular website for it. And although the administrator hasn't said there isn't a cgi-bin FAQ, I'm pretty sure there isn't. I've been all around the "ubb" section of the server and there are no FAQ's whatsoever.

So as far as the "root" directory is concerned, the only information I can give you on that is that it is http://www.ubb.org/ And that's the top of the file structure.

I don't see the four variables files anywhere in your list. All the remaining cgi files have correct permissions. Your Members directory however does not have correct permissions, it should be 777.

However, none of the above will fix your problem. I'm able to access the test-cgi file I see in your listing above, however whenever I try any of the other files I get a page cannot be found.

Do you have any other scripts that run fine from the cgi-bin? It might be a server setup issue which is beyond my capabilities. I'm going to wait and see if Hal or mjrand have any clues on what could be going on, plus both of them are more knowledgable about UNIX server setups than I.

Ok, I changed the MOD on the Members directory to 777.

As for the other variables files...everything that came in the .zip is in the cgi-bin. I've checked, and rechecked. Re-downloaded, and resinstalled that part of the installation. (had to change MOD's on them again too!)

I can wait, I'm not in a rush. (not much) And I still have to get word back from the server admin about certain things posted earlier.

Thanks for the help so far though.

The cgi-bin directory on your server might be reserved by your host for system cgi scripts. Create a cgi-local directory and try running the scripts from there.

Okay, did that.

Now at least I don't get a "page not found" error.

Now I just get the script typed out in a text-like document.

New path to new cgi-bin is

www.ubb.org/ubb-cgi/

But it's still not working. *grumbles*

When it shows text it means the directory is not setup to execute cgi scripts. Currently the directory name is ubb-cgi. Try creating a directory named cgi-local and see if the scripts run from there.

If they don't, I suggest you contact your host and ask them which directory needs to be used to run cgi scripts.
