the short version:

1. i added a new forum (fine)
2. i changed the forum view to "by category" or some such... then all of my forums disappeared!
3. everything else seemed fine in the admin (i.e. members db)
4. then i got this error in the admin: (all within about 10 minutes)

Error including the required files:

Be sure you uploaded UltBB.setup, Styles.file, mods.file and forums.cgi in ASCII/Text mode to your CGI directory. [This is a manual setting on your FTP software]

Make sure spelling and case are correct: UltBB.setup not ultbb.setup.

Here is the message returned from UBB:

UltBB.setup did not return a true value at E:serverspowerpagego2macwwwpowerpagecgi-bincpanel.cgi line 38.

this UBB used to work fine.
NO ONE deleted the file in question.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me, and someone tell me that a year's worth of VALUABLE forums and posts are not gone.

thank you

Download a copy of UltBB.setup from your server and compare it with a clean version from a UBB distribution zip.

Are all the entries in the distribution present in the server version? Is there a "1;" on its own line at the bottom of the server UltBB.setup?

more importantly: if i replace this file, will my forums come back?

It's not cpanel.cgi you need to worry about, it's UltBB.setup. Replacing either will not help. In fact, replacing UltBB.setup will probably make things worse. <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

If UltBB.setup lacks a "1;" at the bottom, put one there and upload a copy of it in ASCII to your UBB's CGI directory, then reset permissions on it. That should kickstart things into working again.

If you continue to get errors after that, you'll probably want to open up a support ticket so an Infopop tech can examine and resolve the problem.

Support tickets are FREE. Infopop RARELY charges for support. IIRC, only three people have ever been requested to pay, and only then because extensive repair work had to be done.
