You guys behind InfoPop seemed to have turned all your attentions to the UBB6. Will there continue to be updates and improvements on the UBB 5 or is it now an unsupported product?

Would you allow a select group of CGI / Perl / JavaScript (and others) programmers to work on the UBB and optimise routines and code to make it a better product?

The UBB 5 for my needs is much far superior to the UBB 6 and I think you'll find many will also agree with me on this. Now the UBB6 is in the limelight perhaps you could make the UBB5 open source (or at least relax some of the restrictions you impose on distribution issues). That way UBB hobbyists like myself could improve on the code and optimse it for certain enviroments and uses.

The UBB5 is an excellent product but I still feel there is still a great potential for further development and work that could make it even better.

I await a responce from the powers that be!!! <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

As far as I understand Infopop's position (I'm sure they'll advise us if I'm mistaken).

UBB5 will continue to be available in the members area for a while after UBB6's release. While it is available, it will continue to be supported. However, I doubt you'll see anything but security patches.

I can say with near certainty you'll never see version 5.50 (and probably not 5.49 either).

And personally, I doubt Infopop will release any rights on UBB5 - just my opinion, but I see no reason for them to. They still own the copyright, and want to encourage people to move to UBB6.

Anyway, I'll be pointing this thread out to Navaho for him to give a once-over.

Graeme
PS See below - that's about as final an answer as you're going to get.

UBB5.x will still remain in the Member's area for some time to come although developement on it has stopped. If there are any future releases they will not contain new features.

UBB5.x is still copyright Infopop Corp. and will not be released as open source or for outside developement.

Well thats a real shame. I would have though that an up-and-coming organisation like InfoPop would take a wider stance on these issues. It seems to me that you're all in this for the $$$ (although that isn't nessarily a bad thing!!! <img src="https://www.ubbcentral.com/boards/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> )

Well I tryed my best, I gave it a shot but you guys just don't seem to care about us guys that work with the UBB / Perl / CGI for fun rather than profit.

Might have to start up a Free UBB Clone and put you guys out of business!!!

UBB5 IS at the end of the line, and is has been replaced by the bloatware UBB6 which will never get out of Beta and cost you a bomb to own and run!!!

But it didn't really come across that way..

Anyway, this thread doesn't really belong in HDI, so I'm going to close it..

As always, feedback to []mmoore@infopop.com[/]
