From another post in the test forum:
modern internet
Are there any plans to implement CSS Sprites on the software in future releases?
I ask because all the current optimization tools Such as gtmetrix pingdom tag them to be addressed.
Such as

https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/general/ventura/newposts.gif
https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/general/ventura/toggle_closed.gif
https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/general/ventura/toggle_open.gif
https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/icons/default/book.gif
https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/icons/default/grin.gif
https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/icons/default/image.gif
https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/icons/default/lightbulb.gif
https://sundance-communications.com/forum/images/icons/default/sick.gif

Appear multiple times on a page load and you get a nag when running the tools.
Most all are very small gif files but it still gets a tick mark on the tool

In addition, those are POST ICONS. And they can easily be added/removed.

Control Panel > Images & Icons > Post Icons

Image Sprites are a collection of images put into a single image.
https://css-tricks.com/css-sprites/

This is not appropriate usage for easy customization of Post Icons, Graemlins, Avatars, Forum Images, News Images, and Moods, where a forum owner would want to replace one or two images with their own custom image/images to fit their forum presentation. Especially if a single page was displaying 5 of sprites from a package of 100. All of those colorful 100 sprites would need to be downloaded when just 5 of them were needed.

CSS Sprites animation -

Now dump your 50 gifs in to that and have all of their animations in that single file.

Does this even make sense to do smile

Your browser does not download them multiple times. Check your browser cache.

They are customizable layout images. And are customized per each forum custom style or per each website's custom design.

UBB.threads is also already using for Icon Fonts from https://fontawesome.com/

Icon fonts are similar to sprites in that the achieve the same thing: combining multiple images into a single request.

How to use:

These validation tools are created for the vast majority of cases; this for example would be a recommendation for static content websites where things seldomly change and the users don't have access to multiple layouts, and not web forum where there are different styles, moods, icons, avatars, animations, etc are involved.
