I don't blame them sometimes. When I've had time to talk to a guard at a gate, they are often working 12+ hour shifts all week. Longer if coworkers call off. But the getting paid to sleep concept does sound sweet.

Lol indeed; especially since they have to go through training for everything... I actually contemplated being a security guard, but I didn't have transportation out of city for training ...

I remember a few years back I was working night shift for awhile at my other job. It was really slow and normally I'd just sleep through the night. Sometimes the phone would ring and I'd need to answer it using the standard "Network Operations, this is Rick". The problem was I'd wake up out of a sound sleep I'd draw a complete blank on what I needed to say and just end up saying "Hello?". So, I had a piece a paper I kept beside me so I could read what I actually needed to say

That's the hardest part about working night shift At one point, when I first went to work for a home health they were having me work days during the week and nights on the weekend - I spent my 2 days off getting sleep so I could switch to the other schedule. I *think* they were taking advantage of me I had one pediatric patient on a vent who had to have the light very dim so he could sleep, yet I'd have to stay awake, making no sound, charting by a night light. I lasted 6 months and that was probably the hardest job I've ever worked just because of the demands of staying awake in the dim light/quiet.
