Setting Permissions with WS_FTP

The following instructions will help you set permissions appropriately if you are using the WS_FTP client.

1.       Connect to your server by entering your FTP address, FTP userID and FTP password in the fields at the top of the screen. Click Go.

2.       Highlight a file or folder on which you want to set permissions.

3.       Right click and select Properties. A box will appear.

4.       In the “Numeric Value” field, enter the correct permission level (777, 755, 644, etc.) according to the installation documentation.

NOTE: You can only change permissions remotely on Unix and other *nix servers. You can not change permissions remotely on Windows servers.

5.       Click ok.

To review what is set and what is not, view the “Attributes” column in the main WS_FTP window. Here are some of the common permissions and their alphabetical equivalent:

drwxrwxrwx is a directory set to 777
-rwxrwxrwx is a file that is set to 777

drwxr-xr-x is a directory set to 755
-drwxr-xr-x is a file that is set to 755

drw-rw-rw- is a directory set to 666
-rw-rw-rw- is a file that is set to 666

drw-r—r-- is a directory set to 644
-rw-r--r-- is a file that is set to 644
