One gallon saltglazed stoneware crock. Stamped \"J. SWANK & CO/ JOHNSTOWN\" (PA) and \"1.\" Incised band at shoulder. Nicely defined collar at neck. Cobalt brushed leaf design. Great warped top and other in-making blemishes add to the character of this handsomepiece. Appears to have been slightly over fired in the kiln, causing some of the glaze to erode, though minimal use damage. Still, a cool crude example.Date: 1860-1880.Size: 10 1/2″ tall.

A few thoughts on stoneware: Stoneware was originally designed as utilitarian objects. Typically, these pieces were put into service for many years. As such, stoneware will generally show signs of heavy wear and usage. Some chips and cracks are usually in evidence, and serve as reminders that stoneware was first and foremost meant to be functional. These factors should be taken into account when evaluating a piece.

Condition:In-making blemishes and warps.Chip at base edge appears to be in-making. A fewsurface only lines in base. No body cracks. Very clean. As-is. Please use photos and description to determine condition.
