Very Rare and important, 1883 Southern Exposition / Louisville, Kentucky World\'s Fair So Called Dollar in outstanding, uncirculated condition with a brilliant, silvered plate like surface.
This very rare, Southern Exposition So Called Dollar and measures approx. 1 3/4\" in diameter and almost 1/4\" thick. The obverse features an image of the massive exhibition building with paired medals below and text that reads \"Southern Exposition\" and \"Louisville, KY.\". The reverse features a laurel wreath with enclosed text that reads \"An Exhibition of the Arts & Industries of the World / Opens Aug. 1st / Continues One Hundred Days / 1883\".
We have been unable to find and recent sale or sale records for this rare World\'s Fair So-Called Dollar / Medal. What we did find was that it has only been found in white metal with a generally dull, white metal surface. The example offered here is VERY heavy and likely has a base of white metal but the surface is a brilliant silver - likely silver plated but it almost looks aluminum clad it is so bright!! The Medal is holed at the top and the reference we found stated it is found \"holed less than half of the time\".
This very rare and wonderful, 1883 Southern Exposition / Louisville, Kentucky World\'s Fair So-Called Dollar is in fantastic, original, un-circulated condition. There is no wear of any kind to even the highest points of the strike and the Metal retains its wonderful, brilliant, silver colored surface. There are a few tiny and minor dings on the rim and as stated above it is holed at the top. Overall this rare So-Called Dollar is exceptionally well preserved and it displays beautifully.
