1892 WEST POINT / UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY CLASS BOOK / PHOTO ALBUM
Price: US $1814.00
Exceptionally rare wonderful, original United States Military Academy / West Point 1892 Class Album / Year Book / Photo Album containing 18 Cabinet Card Photographs of the West Point Faculty Members (including Generals Phil Sheridan, William Tecumseh Sherman, John McAllister Schofield, Superintendent John Moulder Wilson, etc.) and 61 Cadets of the Class of 1892. Also included are 10 large format (9” by 7”) views of West Point, Cadets in formation, U.S.M.A. Tennis Team, dining room, barracks, a bird's eye view of the grounds, and other views from the Academy. While none of the cadets in the album are identified, one notable figure from the class of 1892 is Charles Pelot Summerall, who went on to serve as the U.S. Army Chief of Staff from 1926 until 1930.

This fantastic, 1892 West Point “Class Book” Photo Album measures approx. 11 1/2” by 10” and features a gold gilt shield on the front cover with a banner that reads “U.S.M.A.” Also on the front cover is the name of the original Cadet owner “Louis Ray Burgess”.

The Album contains 20, card mount leaves with inserts for two Cabinet Cards on each side of the leaf. 79 of the 80 mounts are filled with the original Cabinet cards – a single mount in the Cadet section is empty – this likely held the portrait of the owner Louis Ray Burgess and was taken out and preserved by his family. The Album begins with Photographs Generals Sheridan and Sherman followed by 16 Pache Brothers Cabinet cards of the faculty members at West Point in 1892.

Next the Album contains the portrait photographs of the 61 Cadets in uniform and finally there are 5 card mount leaves with an insert on each side for a single large format photographs. All of the Images in the Album are by Pach Brothers on New York except the portraits of General Sheridan (backmark of C. M. Bell) and General Sherman (with mark of Sarony). Neither the Cadets or Faculty members are identified by name but research would certainly all the next owner to identify all members of the Class of 1892.

While we have owned a number of Class Albums from Ivy League Colleges similar to the one offered, this Album, this is the first United States Military Academy / West Point Album we have ever had the pleasure to own.

We will be doing further research on this Album and the Cadets and Faculty Members pictured and will add to this description in the next few days.

This very rare and wonderful, 1892 West Point Class Photo Album is bound in its original, pebbled leather covers which are very worn. The binding is intact and sound but the spine cover is lacking. The covers are edge worn but still attractive and with a bit of leather conditioning will clean up significantly. The Album lacks one of the two brass clasps that hold the album shut. The interior mounts are mostly very well preserved except for a single leaf which is vertically split at the center line and tape repaired. Two of the mounts for the large format Photographs have some damage to the edging around the image. Album or present except one – a portrait of a cadet. All of the Cabinet Card Photographs are in very good condition. Generally clean and crisp and exhibiting razor sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. These Cabinet cards are examples of the highest quality work of one of the very finest Portrait Photographers of the period – Pach Brothers of New York City. There is some scattered light foxing to some of the images and some age toning and foxing to the mounts.
