This photo is an excellent high quality 8” x 10” black & white glossy new photo reproduction of a 1957 MACK B-73 with Factory Integral Sleeper pulling a 35’ GREAT DANE Tandem Reefer Trailer with an Ice Bunker, owned by Cleadous Naylor of Dunn, NC. The original photo was taken in Toledo, OH in 1957.

”SAMPLE” will not appear on your photo, it is only on the scanned image. Laying the “SAMPLE” sheet over the photo for the scan, causes the image to be slightly yellowed. Your photo reproduction will be pure black & white with no yellow cast.

DESCRIPTION: This is a very typical tractor-trailer combination for the southern produce haulers of this period. During the late 1950s and early 1960s the single axle Mack B Models with their integral factory sleeper ruled the highways for many southern produce haulers, followed by Autocars and Whites. ‘Putt-putt’ was common terminology for ice bunker trailers, the small ‘putt-putt’ Wisconsin or Briggs & Stratton gas engines ran a fan that blew cool air from the ice over the load. Most truck stops of that era had icing facilities.

In April 2015 I was contacted by the son of Cleadous Naylor who told me that his father had bought this Mack B-73 new in 1957 along with its 35’ Great Dane trailer, driving it until he replaced it 1963. It was powered by a Cummins 200 with a 15-speed Triplex. It was red with a black hood to cut down on the sun glare. Cleadous was a produce hauler until he was 75, passing a few years ago at age 91. In the winter he would haul produce north from Pompano Beach, FL to Boston, and in the summer he would haul pickles south from Toledo and Fremont, OH. When his son was young, he recalls washing the Mack for his father. Prior to the extended hood B-73, Cleadous had an A-50 Mack.

MACK B MODELS: Mack introduced the new B Series of trucks in the Spring of 1953, producing them until 1966. The diesel powered B-61 Mack was by far the most popular of the B Series, producing some 47,459 over its 13-year lifetime, until finally phased out by the Mack R Model in 1965-66. Fully rounded fenders, hood and cab, resulted in an eye-catching design for the entire B Series. The new cab had improved ventilation, lighting, a V-type windshield, better instrumentation, and better access to the engine compartment. A new END-673 Thermodyne Diesel Engine was also introduced in March 1953, rated at 170-hp and 205-hp in the turbocharged version, really making the Mack diesel truck models far more economical and dependable. Most Mack highway tractors would have had the 2-stick 10-speed Duplex transmission, or the 15-speed Triplex. For those wanting a little more power, the Cummins 200 was a popular option in the larger B-73 Mack. 2,520 B-73 Models were produced between 1955 and 1966.
