Ambiguity

\"Ambiguity\" is a seemingly innocuous term. Maybe it is in a lot of cases. But one place where it is definitely not harmless is on . Yet is inundated with it. Everything produced by the buyers, the sellers, and the company ― especially the company ― and its software, its rules, all of it, is literally laced with ambiguity. Ambiguity shows up on every page, every transaction, and every piece of software that produces, the descriptions and transactions - all of it - everywhere.

And I can prove what I\'m saying here: for example, we\'ve all seen cases where asks us for our opinions on something; I know I have, plenty of times. And I\'ve given them my opinion, almost always with my name and contact information attached. I\'ve encouraged them to reply, and yet they never, ever have replied. This is ambiguity. Do they really desire our response, or don\'t they? They say they do, but they don\'t. What they really want is us to simply think that they care what we think, and that\'s very different from actually caring.

Not convinced, then how about this: one of their several major \'sorts\' is price + shipping. But their calculation of these values doesn\'t take into consideration the number of items the seller is selling. So, here\'s a multi-billion dollar company, , asking each and every one of its buyers to accept the idea that buying 5 items at $20 is lower in price than buying 50 of the same item at $40. Well, there is a whole lot of ambiguity in that.

There are many other examples, but here\'s the worst, and then I\'ll get on with it. In \'s so-called search block, the following are not considered synonyms - that is to say, each of these words produces a different result: one, 1, 1.0, 1.00, unity, as do each of the following terms: one thousand, kilo, 1000 1,000 5000/5 and so on.

This ambiguity is why, as a seller, in the title block of all my product descriptions, I put either (Quantity 1), (Quantity 10) or, if I\'m really short on space, (Qty 1), (Qty 10) so that the customer has no doubt how many of the items are being sold. I do this to remove ambiguity. And so this world would be a better place if the geniuses at would simply add a block \"Quantity\" or \"Price Each\", or better yet, both.

I tell you all that to tell you this: I was shocked to find this prize cow of ambiguity on one of the manufacturer\'s data sheets for these RJ45 connectors, it was the item \"Gender: Jack\". Well, the \"J\" in \"RJ45\" does stand for \"Jack\", as in \"Registered Jack\", but the term \"Jack\" does not indicate gender. \"Jack\" simply means the connector mounts on a panel, a plate, a wall, an enclosure, or any fixed item such as a phone. And while many, maybe even the majority, of jacks are female, many of them are not. This is equivalent to the opposite term, plug, which does not mean \"male\", but rather that it\'s normally mounted on the end of a wire or a cable or something movable. Again, this was the manufacturer who originated this ambiguity, not the seller. Anyway, for the record: This RJ45 item is a Jack and it is female in gender.

RJ11 and RJ45 Jacks Application Jack Width Wire

On I sell both this item, the RJ45 Ethernet/LAN connectors, and a closely related item, the RJ11 phone connectors. There is a link near the bottom of this item so that you can jump to the phone connectors and another link back from there so that you can easily go back and forth between the two. There are no more ubiquitous connectors in all of electronics than these connectors, and most of us think we know all about them. However, \"the devil\'s in the details\", and so it\'s worth a closer look at some of those details, especially concerning the RJ11 phone connectors

I made the chart and drawing above to illustrate several things about these jacks. A quick look here and especially at the RJ11 item shows that the RJ45 jacks are way more straightforward and standardized than the RJ11s. So this section is much shorter and less detailed than the same section in the RJ11 description; but if you use both the RJ11 phone connectors as well as these RJ45 Ethernet connectors (as most techs do), you may want to look closely at both items to become familiar with their similarities and especially their differences.

The RJ45 is an even more common connector than the RJ11 and all the other phone RJ connectors combined. The main differences being that it uses 8 wires rather than the 2, 4, or 6 used by the RJ connectors and that it\'s slightly wider. Please note that this extra width is almost exactly about 2mm; the RJ45 and RJ phone connectors all have a 1mm pin spacing, so this extra width is exactly two pins wider.

This being the case, the RJ45 has the simplicity of design that helps to make it and its associated CAT 5 cables the widely popular standard that it is. I could almost leave it at that except for one caveat that is one of the crazier things in all of electronics. The designers of this standard had a chance at making a near perfect standard, and in my opinion, they blew it. Basically, as most of you know, rather than making a straight path of 8 color-coded wires in and letting them go straight through and come out the RJ45 on the other end of the cable in the identical order, they crossed several wires.

Now, you can talk about performance, cross-talk and other jargon about the convoluted reasoning behind the decision to cross the wires, but I think it\'s a very hard sell; I\'ve not heard a single description of why this was done that I thought made even a modicum of sense. And, you can tell me all you want about the ease of memorizing the order of the colors, but I only make Ethernet cables every so often, and I have to look the wiring order each time. And, whether or not you remember the right order, making them and getting it right is another thing all together. The little crossovers in the tiny little channels in an RJ45 connector doubles the time and triples the failure rate of CAT5 cabling. And don\'t tell me you don\'t have that problem; I\'m the guy who gets called when it starts acting up days, months, or even years down the road. I\'ve been called to repair network wiring too many times for you to convince me otherwise; I know darn good and well that a cable that worked for a long period of time, and then became nonfunctional was good at its original installation, and failed later because of what? An intermittent connection, of course. And guess what, it\'s right at the end where you\'ve had to make the stupid, crazy, overlap of wiring.

Well, as it turns out, at least for these 110 Connect punch down RJ45 jacks, that difficulty is erased, since with the jacks that we\'re selling here, this problem is taken care of for you in that the little circuit board on the underneath side ports the wires through for you. All you have to do is follow the color code on the side, punch the wires into place and voila, it comes out right. You only have to worry about the colors on the plug (i.e., the RJ45 male ends) of all your CAT 5 cables.

Here are the boxes and labels. The top photo is the box of 25 that the manufacturer ships. The second is its label. The third picture is the package of 1 (this is what you\'ll get), and the bottom photo is a blowup of the third picture\'s label.
