Microsoft Bookshelf was a reference collection introduced in 1987 as part of Microsoft\'s extensive work in promoting CD-ROM technology as a distribution medium for electronic publishing. The original MS-DOS version showcased the massive storage capacity of CD-ROM technology, and was accessed while the user was using one of 13 different word processor programs that Bookshelf supported. Subsequent versions were produced for Windows and Macintosh and became a commercial success as part of the Microsoft Home brand. It was sometimes bundled with personal computers as a cheaper alternative to the Encarta Suite. The Encarta Deluxe Suite / Reference Library versions also bundled Bookshelf.

This CD contains an integrated installer for Microsoft Bookshelf 1996-97, Business Tools and Templates for Microsoft Office 4.2.1, Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1, Microsoft Internet Connection Wizard, Internet Assistant for Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Office Manager (MOM) Updater, and supporting system components. Each of these components is installed if you select Easy Install. You can also select Custom Install and select only those items you want. Each of the main components will be installed at the root level of your hard disk unless you choose to install them in a specific folder.
Install Internet Assistant
From this CD, you can also install the Internet Assistant for Microsoft Word. Double-click on the Install Internet Assistant alias to begin installation. Microsoft Word must be closed when you install the Internet Assistant for Microsoft Word.
Microsoft Bookshelf 1996-97
You can run Bookshelf directly from the CD. However, to play the movies and hear the sounds, QuickTime 2.0 or later must be installed in your System Folder. If Bookshelf can\'t find these files, it will prompt you to run the Installer. Although installing the application to your hard drive requires about 7 MB of free space, it makes the program launch and run noticeably faster. The text, sounds, and images remain on the Bookshelf 1996-97 CD, so you will still need to insert the CD to run Bookshelf.
To run Bookshelf from the CD, insert the CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive, double-click on the CD icon, and double-click the Microsoft Bookshelf alias.
Business Tools and Templates
To run the Business Guide or Templates from the CD, insert the CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive, double-click on the CD icon, open the Business Tools and Templates folder, and double-click the file you wish to open.
What is included in the Business Tools and Templates?The Business Tools and Templates folder contains 43 small business tools/templates for Microsoft Office for Macintosh, the Business Guide, and Checklists that complement the Business Guide.
The collection of small business templates (in the Small Business Templates folder) for Microsoft Office for Macintosh contains the following:

The Business Guide is a collection of over 400 tips, checklists, and other information for small businesses. The HTML and graphics files for the Business Guide are stored in the Guide folder. Start the Business Guide by double-clicking on the Business Guide Start alias. If you delete the alias, locate the frameset.htm file in the Guide folder and create a new alias.
The Checklists folder contains Microsoft Word checklists that compliment the information in the Business Guide.
Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.1
To run Microsoft Internet Explorer from the CD, insert the CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive, double-click the CD icon, open the Internet Explorer 2.1 folder, and double-click the Internet Explorer 2.1 application icon.
Internet Connection Wizard
The Internet Connection Wizard is provided to help you get connected to the Internet with a PPP account from an Internet Service Provider. To run the Internet Connection Wizard from the CD, insert the CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive, double-click the CD icon, open the Internet Connection Wizard folder, and double-click the Internet Connection Wizard application icon.
Internet Config 1.3
To run Internet Config from the CD, insert the CD into your computer’s CD-ROM drive, double-click the CD icon, open the Internet Config 1.3 folder, and double-click the Internet Config application icon. If required, you will be prompted to install the Internet Config extension.
MOM Updater
The MOM Updater provides fixes for certain problems experienced with the Microsoft Office Manager on some systems. It is highly recommended that you install the MOM Updater. This will be installed automatically if you choose Easy Install when you run Install Bookshelf and Tools. If you do not run the installer, it is recommended that you run the MOM Updater by opening the MOM Updater folder and double-clicking on Office Manager Updater.
