Found at an estate sale, this frustrating vintage Apple Macintosh Performa 640CD DOS-Compatible (PC) Model M3076 desktop computer had sat unused and gathering dust on a desk in an upstairs office for years. The date of manufacture is 11/27/95. It has no visible damage but won’t power up. When the power on button is pressed it doesn’t chime but does make a brief, faint static noise I think is coming from the speaker. The button to open the CD drive tray doesn’t work either. The usual reasons for a failure like this include a bad clock backup battery, leaking capacitors, and a bad power supply. The clock backup battery, which is the original one, is dead but in this case I doubt that’s the problem. I don’t see any indication of leaking capacitors so I suspect the problem is with the power supply. For this reason this computer is sold for parts or repair.

Note that this is a large, heavy computer. The case is 16” long, 13” wide, and 4.5” tall. It weighs almost 20 lbs. The logic board with the clock backup battery can easily be removed by removing a plastic door on the back, removing two screws, and sliding it out. The power supply is more difficult to get to. I’ve cleaned the dust off the case, which is yellowed and has a scratch on the top. A disassembly and repair service manual can be found online.
