Afine, rare ancient Chinese Northern Qi figure of a soldier, dating to 550 - 577 AD.
Wearing long loose fitting robes, this elegant figure is depicted in the traditional attire of a Northern Qi warrior. He stands to attention, with his hands clasped together, under his robes.The martial spirit of the piece is distinct from the gracile form of its subject; his benign expression and sensitively rendered features provide a serene quality.
The short lived but important Northern Qi Dynasty marked the beginning of a revival in Chinese ceramic art styles after the cataclysmic wars and the social chaos of the 4th century. The Northern Qi produced truly beautiful figures which are now recognized as the bedrock upon which art styles reached their zenith under the later Tang Dynasty. Some of the most characteristic artworks of the period are these exquisite dense grey limestone sculptures, often found in large cave temples such as those at Xiangtangshan. With its statuesque majesty, the artist who created this piece has clearly taken inspiration from these larger monumental sculptures.

This piece is from a large number of mostly Chinese antiques, purchased from a shop clearance in the south of England. These items were all exhibited at London department store Fortnum & Mason, approximately 15 years ago.
